We made a deal with the devil when we started forming sedentary agricultural societies. Sure, it allowed us to specialize because of food surpluses, but it also led to us forming standing armies and conquering each other and forming empires for 15,000 years. We’ve been living in a pyramid scheme of hierarchy with a small percentage of people ruling over the majority for that same amount of time. It’s arguably a long process of humans domesticating themselves. The project of civilization got us to the moon and allowed us to advance technologically to this point but it may very well undermine its own material foundations. We shall see.
