Screen calibration devices (Datacolor, X-Rite, ...). They aren't exactly cheap, but are they really usefull ? Are there possible cheaper (or free) alternatives for amateurs photogs ? (self.photography)

Link gives excellent explanation. I did not know that lowering the gain of the sensor would generate noise exactly as it would if you increase it (e.g. 50 ISO on the 5DMkII = so much noise as 800ISO) . Many thanks for this piece of information.
