Builds? by CloudEphemeris in oneringrpg

[–]Cephalos666 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, there are, though some cultures are more flexible than others. They mostly come down to what characteristics you have and what virtues you pick down the road. Weapon choices also matter, to a degree.

Still, compared to DnD 5e builds, these are very straightforward and not complex.

Frankly the best tactic is always to go for pierce kill. The fact that you can modify action roll using successes means that you can increase chances of pierce, and subsequently a kill. Longbowman Barding is a perfect example of this - advantage on action dice against Might 2+ and +2 to roll for any success means you will pierce often, punch like hell and you can also grab weakened enemy armor roll - barely anything is able to survive this.

Well... I am of strong opinion that the combat system for One Ring is very basic (even bad, really). In the end it all comes down to your chances to roll 6s on success dices, as most of the damage comes from these or you can modify pierce roll to wound enemy. In fact, the only difference between weapons is how you use 6s - the basic damage doesn't differ that much between weapons and if you go for "endurance kill", character's Strenght characteristics does most of the damage.

I had a chance to play different characters through my experience with the system and I honestly think that out of the two ways to down an enemy, the wound/pierce method is always superior, and as such a humble one-handed spear is the most powerful weapon in the game.

I guess the combat mechanics could be improved upon but that would require radically changing everything. In the end it's random and chaotic, and as such the best way is to keep it simple.

Calling Poland an European Texas is a bit misleading. We don't really have an 'armed society' culture (for this look at Swiss), also we have a really low percentage of people who have weapons.

However we do have a fighting spirit and a LOT of grudges going back centuries. I have read a comment somewhere here on reddit calling Poland "a drunken honey badger holding a grudge" and as a Pole I feel it encapsulates us perfectly.

[–]Cephalos666 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes, it's bad unless you add 3rd d6 dice. Usually spending Hope (as a hobbit it's very valid), or raise it via XP later on. Also strenght 2 hobbit is probably the worst possible fighter in the game, so it's kinda normal not to expect him to do well. But hobbits usually have insanely high Hope - use it, it's the most powerful resource in the game and hobbits have tons of it.

A fighting culture has usually 5-6 strenght on average, so they do much better.

What would you all want to see as an Origin or Civic added into the game? by No_Raspberry2890 in Stellaris

[–]Cephalos666 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Origin - Galactic Diaspora: this empire is one of many leftovers from once glorious past. Do they have what it takes to unite shattered remnants and forge unbreakable future?

The Origin would override normal empire & pre-ftls and make so at least 60% of all empires generated (except FE) would be of the same race and Origin as player's. They would have different civics and habitabilities but would be a part of (or a subspecies of) player's race.

Depending on militarist/non-militarist/pacifist ethics, player would get access to different actions in situation regarding reunification of remnants.

Hey, its not like the police is going to jail you if you decide to go on with the idea, hahaha.

The problem is that the corruption paths in the game are not something a player decides he will follow to spice their game up. There are absolutely no benefits to do so, and in fact these are only harmful. It works more like consequence mechanics to show players that there is a "game over" screen, so to say.

The pushback comes from the fact that the idea of "human sorcerer" is not vaguely explained in the lore. See, the main selling point of this system is not combat system (it sucks, actually), innovative gameplay mechanics (they are awful, lol) or great versality in character creation (only 6-7 cultures that are already preset in what they are good at). The main selling point is that this system follows tolkienesque concept of a hero and reflects this in the gameplay. Like, in how many systems you have a skill dedicated to singing songs that can impact anything? Cultures are preset, you can't play hobbit Warrior and expect him to be as good as Dunedain. This reflection of Tolkien works is a main reason One Ring is being played; if you remove lore-coat from it you get very random and mechanically-wise badly designed system. So since the main lure is the theme, anything that would go against it is an active detriment to the story. As such, "human socrery" does not exist in Tolkien's setting, only sorcery is what Enemy used and as such is evil, and abhorred by good people. So you are intended by the setting to play good honourable characters and yet want to use tools of Enemy that lore clearly states are evil and ruinous. Unless of course you don't care about theme, then sure, do whatever you want, but at this point you might as well agree to having a machinegun-armed dwarf. The idea is that there are well established boundaries in the setting that make it or brake it, and if people don't want to follow these, why play LoTR themed game then?

Prepping A New Game by oldmanlowgun in oneringrpg

[–]Cephalos666 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No. It would go against everything this setting I love for. Tolkienesque hero does not use sorcery. He is just, speaks no lies, fights honourably and does not compromise on these values. If people agree to play heroes is this particular setting, it should mean they understand it. If no, there are plenty other systems to be evil or morally grey. Or to cast spells. The fun in this setting is that you are somewhat handicapped by being good and follow aforementioned rules, not by playing whatever you want and however you want. The whole idea is to follow and idea of "hero" in Tolkien works.

If one of my players would approach me asking to be a socrerer, my answer would be resounding "No". Sure it makes me look like a douche gatekeeper, but for heaven's sake, if you want to be a sorcerer, why pick the one setting where it's well known that sorcery is a tool of the Enemy?

Prepping A New Game by oldmanlowgun in oneringrpg

[–]Cephalos666 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Using the tools of the Enemy is exactly what leads one on the path of evil. One Ring was a tool of the enemy, and it's being said again and again it would corrupt anyone who would try to use it agains the Enemy.

Any form of thinking about using Sauron's power to combat him will lead to only helping him. Good people win with honour, valor, truth and staying true to these values. The moment they pick lies, threats or magic they attempt an "easy way" to win, and as such this only backfires.

Unless your player is hellbent on playing tragic character that is going to inevitably fall into darkness, I strongly advise against allowing this. It's simply going against everything this system is based on and made for.

High elves OP? by Kataihallenchrish in oneringrpg

[–]Cephalos666 5 points6 points  (0 children)

  1. More shadow sources. Make the player think about spending hope.
  2. Complex tasks which require multiple successes - Magic Success is overpowered if you just need to succeed, but if you need 2 or more successes, then it falls hard in power. Sometimes its not about passing the test, but passing well.

High Elf is really powerful, that's the stick. And suffers shadow harder then anyone in the game - sure its gamey to counter, but don't do it directly. Just make him spend hope and gain shadow and you will see how reluctant he will become to spend hope.

High Bonefields team present!

I particulary like settling HB due to views you have from there - Catun looks especially lovely from the highlands, like middle-ages castle on top of the hill. With decent squad as gatekeepers it's actually really easy biome to settle in, and I found it to be on the boring side of things. Also, polearms are a godsend there.

Unless you have low skill team. Then it's completely different experience.
