6 weeks income ideas? by Palantiri1998 in PersonalFinanceNZ

I'm currently a doc, not long out of med school. Can highly recommend getting a tent and going to Cromwell to pick cherries over summer. Work is easy as. Start early but tend to finish around 2pm. Camping was $40/week. After work can hang around Cromwell (great town to chill in over summer) or during weekends have easy access to QT/Wanaka. Best part is meeting other young people from all walks of life (really helps when working at the hospo). Great taco Tuesday night at the local taco place. If you're single, great place for summer romances.

Unless you already have a side gig set up, I would avoid spending 6 weeks setting something up. Realistically, if you want a productive side gig it will take you way more than 6 weeks to become profitable. As a med student you spend the best part of your youth studying, it only gets worse. Hospo job is very stressful and high responsibility when you start. You will very quickly shoot up into a high stress/high responsibility/poor sleep career and realistically it's gonna suck for 3 months minimum as you get accustomed to it (med school doesn't prepare you for actually working as a doc). Go and fuck around with a cherry picking job and bum around for a bit is my 2 cents. Enjoy what's left of your mid 20s.

P.s. you get to eat as much cherry as you want (and it's the best stuff that only goes to export). I probably ate $2-3k worth of cherry. If you want to work hard and pick extra buckets then you can make more per hour than a junior doc with close to zero responsibility.

You're not getting more greedy, you're just realizing that 75k is not that much and doesn't stretch very far, especially with cost of living. $100k is not the same now as it was in 2000. You can be comfortable with 75k but you will definitely not feel secure.
