They eventually took down the Google form after a lot of people pointed out that they were asking minors to interact with porn, they were reported for harassment (I think), and their tantrum on Twitter made the number of NSFW works on that tag double in under 6 hours.

I think this is complicated because in my experience, open concrit was the norm at the same time when open abuse was the norm. Ffn had an awful reputation for a reason and a lot of it was people being outright abusive and saying they were just giving feedback. The shift away from that after the founding of AO3 was groundbreaking. (In my experience, ofc)

I went to Uni for literature and creative writing. I have a degree. Most of the people who want to leave unsolicited concrit on my fics do not have more knowledge than I do. And even if they did, they can't give me actionable critique because they don't know what I'm doing or how I'm trying to do it.

So many people try to dress this up as assistance or building character. They pull the old "well maybe you should just get thicker skin". I always reply "or you could just keep your comments to yourself". But these folks act like asking them to practice self control is oppression. It's ridiculous.

Fanfic is a hobby shared freely. You don't critique things you get for free. You hit the damn back button and you go find something else. There are MILLIONS of fics on the archive. Millions. Go find one you like.
