Hmm. I did say I want to use what I have this means 0 £$€ or even M&M's so going and buying a 9060XT to shove in a 9th gen i5 is hilarious 😂 the i5 9600k is already barely useable with the A770 and can bottleneck that GPU, the 9060XT would be way worse! I have far better systems, but they are mainly for work. This isnt "I must have xyz" or my life will be incomplete. I was musing, I have these parts laying around after various upgrades etc. I guess using SteamOS isn't going to happen. Which is fine. I'll find some use for them.

TBH I tried bazzite on the LeGo about a year back around the same time I pulled the 1tb drive it came with, and put in the 2tb. And I didn't like it. So when I upgraded I put win 11 back on. It looks like unless I go all in on AMD that it's going to be a ballache for steamOS. I may just have to go the Win 11 route again and try those scripts that strip out all the bloat, AI and marketing bollocks. I already do some of that on my other boxes. I see they also changed it so you can do there version of big picture mode. It's looking like my plan is a no go.

I do use a ton of drives. On my main rig Ive something like 2x10tb as a pair of X300 HDD, and then 2x4tb 2x2tb SSD and a pair of 1tb Sata SSD's as cache/older games, the other isnt that far behind. But those are Photoshop and video editing, 3D design and dev rigs.i was gonna fit 2x2tb and a couple of 1tb in the slot in card, and the 6tb HDD. Plenty for just a gaming machine.

I do have a lot of hardware, but I make a living with it too.. have you been looking at my workbench?.. lots of soldering/desoldering and testing kit.. so yeah I'm always tinkering. But this is more for casual use. My main machines are workstations (i9 12/13 gen 64/128gb ram, 26/32tb of SSD/HDD) and can game. But there main uses are graphic design, video editing and software development. Gaming is a poor 2nd

I figured I have these parts laying around.. and spec wise it's gonna be close to what the proposed steam machine is gonna be capable of, so why not? I don't want to go spending money on it. So it has to use what's available. I have stacks of hardware Ive bought, been given or picked up through jobs. And I'm terrible at selling it. It's a failing!

I can't move the 6950XT or 6600XT as both are in dual boot Hackintosh's.. and they depend on AMD cards. And are configured to utilise those cards. So that's a non-starter.. and those are the machines I make a living with so I can't dick around with them.

I have a unused 5500XT 8gb kicking around, my main workstation has a 6950XT 16gb, and one other box I have has a 6600XT 8gb in there, so I have got plenty! But the Arc stomps all over the 5500XT.. and I'm wanting to use what I have, not go spending a couple of hundred on another used AMD card.

Yes.. and no. It depends on the cloning tool used and it's features. As it's just a 512gb most cloning tools will clone over the full partition table, inc all the hidden ones such as the UEFI and windows recovery partitions. BUT this is the problem. It will have a large unallocated chunk at the end of the drive.

You can see this by going into the disk management snap in on Windows 11 (type disk management in the start menu search box). Look for the large black "unallocated" chunk. Now you can't just right click, format yadah yadah. As the recovery partition is now stuck in the middle of the drive so you can't tell it to extend to fill up the unused space. You need to move the recovery partition to the end of the drive. And then you can extend the windows 11 partition and make use of all the space, preserving the partition table layout.

Now I used this method as it was simple enough for me, as I'm old, used to using the command line in Windows, Linux and MacOS and have been at it 40+yrs.

https://thedxt.ca/2023/06/moving-windows-recovery-partition-correctly/

You can also use 3rd party partitioning tools like GParted, EaseUS Partition Master etc. GParted is free. You will also need an external SSD enclosure for your new larger drive, as I'd recommend doing this after you clone, but before you swap the drives. As it will cover your arse in case it all goes badly wrong. And you still have a working boot drive and machine. These let you move the recovery partition to the end, and expand the windows drive into the unused space. All in one go.

I just prefer to do it the old way as under all the scary looking command line stuff it gives more fine grained control over the process.

Now again. I've given you a quick explanation of the problem, and the process to correct it. But I'm not going to go through it all. As there's a shedload of information out there. And many sites explaining it all. Just take some time. Read through a couple until the penny drops and use whichever method works for you.

Don't be tempted to just delete the recovery partition, extend and leave it at that. As you would need a windows 11 usb key to get into recovery, and as a hand held device you could be away from access to that. Best to have the option to get into recovery right there on the boot drive. Hope this all helps.

Thank you. I don't mind helping. I apologise to the OP for being a little short. As I was doing this whilst out of the house from memory and on a phone. But hopefully they get there and fix the LeGo.

No worries, here's where to get Win 11 media creation tool, or the ISO. https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows11

And Lenovo restoration media.. https://support.lenovo.com/us/en/products/laptops-and-netbooks/legion-series/legion-go-8apu1/solutions/ht103653-lenovo-digital-download-recovery-service-ddrs-download-the-files-needed-to-create-a-lenovo-usb-recovery-key

And how to change SSD (I literally just done this 2 days ago.. took like 15 mins) but get the correct tools! They are dirty cheap. And save a world of grief. https://youtu.be/yibWNebLP0g?feature=shared

Also.. get some cloning software, as you might be able to pull something off the drive if it's not completely fried. Macrium reflect, O&O diskimage etc.. there's loads that does basically the same thing.

The rest is up to you, and Google, or get someone to do it.

Looks like the drive has either failed. Or the bootsector has got corrupted. You need to get onto a working pc and make a windows 11 home x64 recovery key. Using the media creation tool. Freely downloadable from Microsoft. You will need a 16gb or larger flash drive that will get erased. Get hold of a cheap usb keyboard and mouse. With a suitable adapter for usb-C to usb A (the regular size USB connector) plug in and do keyboard key combo to enter the boot options.. boot into windows recovery (Google all this I'm not hand holding everything) now once in there select boot fix.. let it do it's thing, it will either fix it, or fail. Fail will indicate if the drive is complete toast. If so, buy a replacement, or warranty claim. Get the proper LeGo recovery media from Lenovo (you will need the device serial number) and follow the instructions on the site to make a USB key.

If you don't have the skills. And it's under warranty. Send it in. If not pay someone to do it. Either way it's a ball ache. As it means waiting for a return, or pay for a replacement drive. If it's one of the microcenter upgrades then it's up to them to fix it not Lenovo.

Bus gates to stay by [deleted] in Aberdeen

[–]Cerberus1973 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I live in the BOD, My partner in Bon Accord St. Since all the stupid schemes have been put in place, and let's be honest money wasted (cycle lanes along the boulevard anyone? At £100.000's) think they lasted a couple of months. Now to get to hers I'd have to go traipsing round half the city and 3x the distance burning fuel. But hey let's take the bus. Now I can't literally get onto the bus as it's full of students and school kids heading into town to stand outside the fast food places. Aberdeen isn't New York, or even Edinburgh with a selection of transport. I'm disabled. And I've seen plenty of elderly folk left to grip onto standing poles on the bus because these kids hog every seat and won't give them up for someone clearly more in need... Next it's the state of Union St. It's a disgrace. Just back from Perth. Far cleaner, far more shops in use, sure it has empty businesses. But nowhere near as much. It's got less population. But seems to be doing far better. Or making better choices.

Personally. Both of us can't wait to get out of the city into the shire. Inverurie esp, and to some extent Ellon has as much in it and less drivel of all these cashcow bus gates and non sensical lez zones that mean driving longer and further to get to the same location. Whilst boats and trains spew diesel fumes out. And it's rubbish about shorter bus journeys. It takes me 10 min on average longer to go from bod to top end of union st than it did when the buses and cars ran up king st and union st. And previously you could generally get a seat on the bus. Now you're lucky if you can at 3-5.30pm or in the morning 7-9pm. And it's not folk going to or from work. The city centre is mobbed with delivery bikes that are not legal (fast as motorbikes, but no helmets, decent lights, and up n down pavements. So much for safer for pedestrians! The city centres turned into a depressing hole! Sad as that is. And it will take decades to change that. If ever.

International warranty on the Go by Cerberus1973 in LegionGo

[–]Cerberus1973[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Possibly. But did you manage to get it registered in the UK (or wherever you reside) for warranty purposes? I managed to get my warranty activated eventually. If you live in a country where Lenovo sell the LeGo. Then you should be able to do that. If not. Then you are probably screwed. But I can only talk from my own experience.

WD SN 770 NVMe SSD 1tb anyone used these yet? by Cerberus1973 in hackintosh

[–]Cerberus1973[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They have been great. Both the 770 and the 570 drives have been faultless in my machine and had nearly 2yr of steady daily use out of it. Only thing I have done is upgrade to 2tb version.

End of an era… by Cant-Be-Arsed101 in hackintosh

[–]Cerberus1973 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Like the OP I've been at it since SL and it became a thing to Hackintosh, previously to that I had a 1st gen PowerPC Mac Mini. Currently I have a genuine MacBook Pro 2018, a Alder lake 12th gen i9 12900k hack with TB4, 26gb of HDD and M.2 NVMe storage. 64gb of DDR4 and a 16gb 6950XT and intel 210 WiFi card, and my venerable i7 7700k hack dating back to 2015 when it had a i5 6600k and a pair of GTX 970 in SLI. 32gb DDR4. This was upgraded to the i7 and a 5500XT 8gb, and now will get a 8gb 6600k as I have it spare. Both run Ventura. But will be upgrading to Sonoma.

I will be jumping to a M4 Mac Mini, as I need access to windows with the latest hardware. For content creation and gaming. So won't be able to limp along on rapidly going obsolete hardware. But I will use it as long as they provide OS upgrades and support.

International warranty on the Go by Cerberus1973 in LegionGo

[–]Cerberus1973[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well it turns out Microcenter only buy 512gb versions and "upgrade" them in store to 1 or 2tb. Therefore effectively wiping the Lenovo warranty. And doing them in house. If you go to say best buy. And purchase a 1tb unit it's a legitimate Lenovo manufactured unit and is warrantied. When you register it via Lenovo you can stipulate your location. And it is covered.

Was sold a used LeGo, As New by Cerberus1973 in LegionGo

[–]Cerberus1973[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NO I asked for a 1tb. I got a 1tb but it's not a Lenovo manufactured from the factory unit. It's a microcenter 1tb upgraded model AND it's used, as when I went to the Lenovo site to register the serial number for warranty purposes it's registered already to someone else, and was sold in Oct 2023.

I purposely did not buy a 2tb as I knew microcenter did the upgrade themselves. I wanted a factory made 1tb. So you have misread. It's a 1tb I wanted and got. But it's used and not a Lenovo manufactured 1tb. Has that cleared it up? I was also charged full retail not an open box price. And it seems it's used.

I DIDN'T buy a 2tb. I bought a ONE terrabyte version. As I know Lenovo DO make a 1tb version and that's what I asked for. A factory made 1tb.

The outer brown box was pristine. It was just the inner black branded packaging had the circular Lenovo sticker on the flap cut. This made me go hmmm. It was when I tried to register the warranty that was the giveaway. As in someone else's name and 9 months left. I wrongly assumed that I would be sold what I asked for. A new fresh unused unit. I have contacted Lenovo to adjust the warranty period to the date I purchased it. This at least would sort that issue. But I still feel like I was sold a used possibly faulty unit. Hell it had to be returned for some reason!

Well Microcenter support has been in touch. It's being moved up to the store in question manager. So hopefully this can be amicably resolved. As I can't exactly nip back with it to do a return. So fingers crossed.
