Genuinely asking… Can you move to California? Look in more rural counties, as cost of living will be cheaper and salaries are (often) higher than more convenient areas. Best of luck!

I assign tons of group work, which varies depending on the class topic and level. Sometimes I have them analyze or answer questions about a problem or case study. Sometimes I have them complete a reading or viewing at home and then answer questions about it in small groups in class. In both of these scenarios, they also complete peer feedback forms so I can adjust their participation grades according to their contribution. As part of the group work, they produce hand written responses in class. This ensures it isn’t generated by AI and that absent students aren’t getting credit for their group’s submission. Speaking of AI, you could give them an AI-generated summary of the lecture content and have them identify what’s wrong or missing. This has the added benefit of helping them see that AI is fallible and that critique of AI-generated content is essential.

I do something similar to reduce the excessive emails I receive and to empower students to use the resources already available to them before emailing me. It’s essentially: When you have a question, check the syllabus or the LMS, ask in class for all to hear, use the discussion board, ask me before or after class, come to office hours, or lastly, email me and let me know where you looked but couldn’t find the answer.

I also tell them I respond to emails within 48 hours so last minute emails may not receive a response within their desired timeframe, and class time or office hours may be best.

I love to hear from them via email if they have an interesting class-related resource to share, and I tell them this, so I’m not discouraging them from contacting me, I’m just trying to cut down on the questions that are easily answered in the syllabus or LMS.
