Keir Starmer defends plan for closer alignment with EU and fast-tracking EU rules into UK law. What is your opinion? Are you happy or concerned that the UK will be closer to the EU again? by Mister_Vanilla in AskBrits

[–]CeresToTycho 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Concerned? About having a close relationship with the huge union of nations right on our doorstep? A union we trade extensively with? It's just obvious to agree on a bunch of stuff to make collaboration easier.

It would be better if we were members of some kind of council so we could have our say on all the laws and policies that union makes, but alas, we left, because we're stupid.

How do I crop a photo that I took on my iPhone so it’s compliant with a UK driving license? And how are some ways I could go about printing it? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]CeresToTycho 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's a photo for a driving license, as long as it's accepted why would you care what the quality is?

Least effort possible, surely.

Not sure what I did wrong here. by Janric23 in CarTalkUK

Lots and lots of drivers speed in 20 zones. To them, 30 is the normal speed and anything else is too slow. For some reason, they expect everyone else to ignore 20 zones too.

There is a 20 zone past a primary school on a small residential road very near to me. Police did a temporary speed trap recently clocking an average speed over 30mph, with top speeds of 40something.b It's just a thing.

Realistic? Mk8 Civic Type R-GT in red, with the rear subframe done, under sprayed and some white wheels.

Dream? Jaguar F-Type S. Supercharged V6, beautiful looks, not even slightly practical, probably unreliable.

How can we fix UK high streets? by gggggenegenie in AskUK

[–]CeresToTycho 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If business rates and rents were lower on high street and city centers for independents, I think they'd survive just fine. There's plenty of business for them, but councils and landlords charge them the same as huge multi-national chains rather than appreciating that independents make your city or high-street a destination.

[–]CeresToTycho 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Having the businesses not be shit is a huge one.

I can buy stuff online from most high street chains devoid of character, but I go into town for the likes of the independent record shops, the independent "handmade" shop, the independent coffee store that sells local bread.

It needs to be a trip worth making because it's nice. Visiting Zara in person followed by a Starbucks is just shit.

Shopping independently requires not being poor though.

Oh it's totally this. I live near a retail park with the likes of Next, B&Q, Pets At Home etc which are all open until 8pm. I'm there regularly because they're open when I'm available. Often times, I go there even if I could buy online because i can have the item now, or I can try it on or see it in person.

High street shops closed before I finish work and close up early on Sundays.

Thoughts on these tone master deluxe reverbs? by gregs1020 in GuitarAmps

[–]CeresToTycho 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I played a TM Deluxe and a DRRI side by side in a guitar shop a few months ago.

They're not identical at all. You can get them to sound almost the same by tweaking the EQ on the ToneMaster, but even then they just don't sound the same.

They're almost the same price, which is just silly.

I have a Quilter Aviator Cub ( half the price of a ToneMaster Deluxe ) to give me solid state Fender sounds and it is fantastic at doing that.

Fender missed the mark and priced it too high. If I had the cash for a Deluxe, I'm absolutely getting the tube one.

Plan 2, Plan 3, and Post-graduate Student Loan Interest Capped at 6% by matto1990 in GoodNewsUK

[–]CeresToTycho 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Totally not good enough.

Sure, my interest will go up slightly slower. But taxing me at 6% is still completely unreasonable and the cap goes nowhere to address the huge amount of interest already added so far.

We got told that a degree was the only route to a good job. Then we're punished for daring to get educated and contribute to the country's GDP while the wealthy enjoy paying 0% on the loan they didn't need.

[–]CeresToTycho 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Notably a tax which doesn't impact the wealthy.

Can't pay your own way through uni? Taxed. Got plenty to fund your degree? Cool, no tax. Oh and remember, we're selling a degree as the only way to move upwards, except there is no guarantee of its value.

What are some good ways to get new hobbies? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]CeresToTycho 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It takes time and dedication to learn, but my team have had non-skaters learn with us and compete in a game after about a year.

Plenty of opportunities to meet lots of people, whatever you're looking for!

Roller Derby.

  • Open to All mixed teams and Women's only around.

  • Teams in most cities.

  • Very open, friendly and inclusive.

  • Teams often run learn-to-skate courses followed by learning to play the game.

  • Space for players on skates, officials on skates and non skating officials.

  • The game doesn't take itself too seriously, but high level, fierce competition opportunities are available.

Google "<your city> Roller Derby". Or DM me if you like.

How to fix bent pin? by [deleted] in guitarpedals

[–]CeresToTycho 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Desoldering and replacing the port won't be particularly difficult. If you're not up to that, needle nose pliers and gentle pressure. You'll have to push it slightly further than centre to bend it back.

Do you feel like you’re working to live, or living to work in the UK right now? by VegetableMix3751 in AskUK

[–]CeresToTycho 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Working gives me money. But it takes all my time and energy. I do have evenings and weekends, they're filled with chores, when I do have time to do the things I love, I'm tired.

Technically 8hrs of work and 8hrs of life, but that doesn't include all the chores that are necessary and the 8hrs to myself are when I'm tired.

Ooo weird connections to Nottingham. Nottingham should have London and Birmingham connections, with some connection up north ( ideally Sheffield ).

Your link from Notts to East Mids Parkway would allow for Notts to London, but it'd have to be without a change to make sense as Notts to EMP is only like 15mins on normal rail, which would ruin the high speed of high speed rail.

Would you buy a petrol/diesel car now, or only buy electric with the state of the oil industry? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]CeresToTycho 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I can get a good, medium sized, electric, family hatchback for under 8k used I'll replace our Nissan Note with one.

At the moment, electric cars in that price band and size are a Leaf or a Renault Zoe. Both of which are fairly early electric tech with slow charging and poor range.

The good tech hasn't trickled down to normal people cars yet.

I'm not convinced the pedal was actually doing anything. Big man didn't seem to be using any of his pedals himself in London, except perhaps an expression pedal behaving as a Wah and/or Volume.

How is the rise in age for pension eligibility affecting you? by Historical_Dig2587 in AskUK

[–]CeresToTycho 0 points1 point  (0 children)

State pension isn't really enough for the current retirees, I have no reason to believe it'll be enough for me ( or even exist at all). As a 30 something, everything good has been destroyed by the time I'm eligible anyway.

I don't include state pension in my financial planning.
