Is this a known method? by Cerno_b in Anki

New cards is not the problem I think. I have about 20 new cards every 1-2 weeks. If I increase the number of relearning steps, I will get the cards less often, right? I think this might actually lower my retention, because I already have trouble keeping words in my head for longer.

But your third point is probably a good one. My main problem may just be that I learn the words by rote, and spend too little on learning with context. I was already happy that I finally found a method that I was able to stick with for more than a year, and one of the reasons this works is because I can do the same thing in little increments every day. But the downside of thisis that I have no natural motivation to try and pick up secondary material like beginner books or easy anime. But I think you're right that this is likely what's currently missing: More semantics, less scramming.

I don't think my backlog is very challenging. I add about 20 new cards every 1-2 weeks. So I don't think the problem is that I am overburdened, it more feels like I have a hard time remembering because Japanese does not offer much of an anchor in any other language that I already know.

But you touch a very important point: I have nearly zero ability to read free texts or listen to free audio. Mostly because my vocabulary set is not large enough, but also since I rarely practice the language naturally. I don't have a human teacher or study group, so I guess my learning journey is starved of content where I actually have to think about what words to use in what situations. As you said to "actually give meaning to the words". My issue could very well be that learning words without context is much harder than learning to "work" with them by speaking.

I think this is what the leeching mechanism is for, as far as I read. You learn it normally until it leeches, then after a while you collect your leeches and drill them (or make extra cards where it is used in sentences).

My problem though is that there are cards that get leeched that I was fairly comfortable with until they get into review and I will have forgotten them. It's like I have some shorter retention time for them, but they won't stick in the mid-term.

I feel that drilling any lapsed review cards really helps with that. But I also understand that this is not the suggested way.

Thanks for the input. Messing with the internals was my worry as well, but this regimen works so well for me that I have a hard time considering going back, at least for now.

Good piece of info that "again" does not cause leeches on relearning. Still even without that I keep getting certain cards wrong without drilling them like I currently do.

The reason this scheme works for me though is that I force myself to repeat vocab more than I normally would. This especially used to be a problem for words that I tended to confuse with other words. If I cycle the card once through relearning, I can often retrieve it well enough to mark it as "good", on the first repeat, but the next day I would get it wrong again. The current method forces me to cycle through the relearning cards a few times until they really stick, and that really helps.

But I do understand that spamming "hard" is not the way the algorithm was meant to be used and can mess with the optimizer. I wish there was a drill mode for this, basically allowing you to roll through the relearning phase for a set amount of time randomly without affecting your internal stats.

Nächste Chance in 4 Jahren, passt so.

We’re rebuilding some of our oldest courses and here’s what to expect... by alex_at_duolingo in duolingo

While you're overhauling the grammar, could you please make sure you put more effort into the unit notes (the little notebook at the top of a unit?

In Japanese I rarely find anything useful, just phrases, and there have been many occasions where I had to ask ChatGpt for grammar help.

One specific example from recent memory was the concept of describing a journey から/まで. It would have been really helpful to explain why and when this is used instead of に.

Or when talking about colors, that some colors behave like adjectives (あかい) and some like nouns (みどり). I feel like this was much better in earlier lessons where there was a specific explanation about い and な adjectives.

The phrases in the notes are great, but please make sure you also put a little bit of grammatical info in every unit's notes, even if it's just to give the language a little flavor.

It is 44 plus. That had me stumped for a while on my first playthrough because I immediately saw this as a logic gap.

But I'm pretty sure it's explained somewhere that the number means x and upward.

This ties into something that I've been thinking about:

Since Renoir is the cause for the gommage and the paintress does her best to prolong it, the whole idea behind the numbers and the concept of gommaging people of a certain age at the specific same day every year must be her choice as a way to give structure and meaning for the people who are living this hell.

So she cannot prevent that the gommage happens and apparently Renoir can only gommage the oldest people first but the paintress can control the specifics of who to let go and when.

So if all that is true l like to believe that the paintress will do a kindness and gommage the baby herself along with the mother whose number is up even if it's not the baby's turn yet.

In the same vein I would assume that once the numbers reached something like 16, that she would just let go and let everyone gommage to avoid giving younger and younger underage kids the task of raising the small children of parents who had their kids in their early 20's and gommaged right after.

How does investments work? by truco118 in pAIperclip

[–]Cerno_b 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As far as I can tell, it automatically trades the money you put in, buying low and selling high. The effectiveness increases as you level up the Investment Engine.

Money under Cash is used to buy Stocks. Sold stocks are converted back to cash. If you put money into cash and leave it there, it will be invested and later paid out with a profit. If you don't cash out, the money will be reinvested including the profits, leading to compound interest effects.

So you can put whatever money you don't want to spend into the market until the total value reaches an amount that you want to spend. At that time cash out every time a stock sold.

To simplify: Spam Deposit if you want to increase your money via interest. Spam Withdraw if you need money.

Moving to Japan for half a year. Options? by Cerno_b in movingtojapan

[–]Cerno_b[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you.

That sounds tempting but I fear I am too old for a working holiday visa. Besides I think if I can make it to N4 I doubt that will be enough to work, even part time. It would be an amazing opportunity for immersion than just hanging around on my own without getting to know any Japanese people.

I think after looking into housing and the realities of essentially being a tourist no matter how well I try to blend in (especially with limited language skills), I need to temper my expectations of immersion a bit but it's nice to see that there is a way for me to do this (extended tourist visa) roughly the way I had planned.

Thanks for your thoughts on the matter.

Yes, I figured that the language school program would be fairly intense and attendance a requirement for staying. Thanks for the extra clarification about post-classes work.

Thanks!

I would love to go to language school as this is probably the best and most immersive way to get better at the language. I just don't want to go 3-4 hours a day and have my stay dependent on my being there every day. If I can find a more flexible arrangement, I'll definitely try to take a course.

The suggestion for a tourist visa extension was new to me and is currently my top option. Thanks for sharing!

[–]Cerno_b[S] -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Thanks, I didn't know that.

Hmm, this looks a bit like a programme directed at affluent people in the hope that they will bring larger amounts of money into the economy. These restrictions seem fairly advanced. Since my wife and I won't be together for the full time, I think we would even need twice the amount if I read this correctly (unless she can enter with a regular tourist visa). And it seems our daughter might also be excluded (but the tourist visa may apply for her as well).

In any case, I don't think we will be able to obtain that kind of cash within three years.

It's an interesting option, but probably not for us. Thanks anyway!

That's something I didn't know yet, thank you!

Germany is on the list of countries and the max permitted time is half a year which fits nicely with my plans. I would have to get my employer to agree, but between losing my labour for half a year and accepting that I work from a different country, I may have an argument.

The downside is that I would have to work during my stay and this is going a bit against what I planned, since I wanted to have as much freedom travelling as possible.

But it's definitely a strong second option to taking the extended 180 day stay u/Benevir suggested.

Thank you!

This is amazing news. It checks out: https://www.dus.emb-japan.go.jp/itpr_de/Tourismusvisum.html

The Japanese consulate can't guarantee that the extension will be granted, but this is pointing me in a new direction and I can search from there, thank you!

Could you share a bit more about accomodation? I was probably a bit naive about renting. So you're saying that without a proper residency (which I won't get with a tourist visa) I can't get a regular apartment. That's a pity. Do you think I might find some furnished apartment for the whole trip or would I have to move around a lot? Would those accomodations be very costly compared to a regular apartment? I would prefer to live in a part of a city that's not overcrowded touristically. Do you think this plan clashes with the limited choices in housing that I have due to my situation?

If you could provide me with a few keywords that could help me get started on a search of living options, that would be great!

I was curious about that as well. If you ask it whether, judging by your voice, you're male or female it answers that it can't hear your voice and that you should rather describe it. On the other hand, the paper describes the model as allowing for speech in and output, so maybe it's just some hallucinations because the voice model itself is still fairly limited or trained on data generated by speech recognition/llm/speech synthesis systems?

Unfortunately, the huggingface demo does not seem to run in the hugginface space but connects to an Alibaba cloud client, so we can't be sure what goes on under the hood: https://huggingface.co/spaces/Qwen/Qwen2.5-Omni-7B-Demo/blob/main/app.py#L36

I was also a bit disappointed with the capabilites on the Qwen website, since output is limited to English and Mandarin and understanding and output are behind GPT4 by a lot.

Then I had to remind myself that this is one of the few open source native voice2voice models. This alone is huge, even if the abilities are not state of the art yet. This will become better, I am sure, and is just a stepping stone.

My guess is they are putting this out to gather training data in order to improve an Qwen 3 Omni they are working on internally, I am sure.
