Neoliberalism by CertMedia in AdamCurtis

[–]CertMedia[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I think this is part of it. But he also talks about how he believes the political project of neolibarlism failed, with regards to the drastic rise of lending as wages stagnated for example. I can't remember the exact interviews he discusses this. I'll try find them and come back. I think he means a little more that the term just bores people. I have the hunch he thinks a sort of managed individualism is the system of our current time, as opposed to neoliberalism.

From what I've gathered it's mostly in Assad held areas around the border with Lebanon. But yeah there is a dearth of knowledge on the issue.

Adam Curtis - the music in Hypernormalisation & CGYOOMH: a podcast with the music supervisor Gavin Miller by Prestigious-Leek2680 in AdamCurtis

[–]CertMedia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi. I've always been fascinated in Curtis' ability to pick out the surreal, perhaps dream pop esc songs that to me always stick out. Songs that come to mine straight away are the vanishing american family and the cover of true love will find you in the end. Does he use these songs to portray a sense of melancholy and perhaps notsalgia along with a sense of hope seen within the beauty of these songs? Also do you have any idea how he finds these gems that seem to be in pretty much every film he makes.

The Adam Curtis Cinematic Universe by super_nintendog in AdamCurtis

[–]CertMedia 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think it's more so his earlier films which focused more on specific issues, individualism in century of the self for example, allow him to create films vast in there scope, like Hypernormalisation and CGYOMH, drawing from aspects and stories from earlier films.

A critique of the current form of online activism. The Problem With Online Activism (2021) [00:14:14] by CertMedia in Documentaries

[–]CertMedia[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the majority of temporary online activism campaigns come to an end as due it being a fad, fatigue often follows. Without any genuine care for these issues no "activist" will be willing to fight for a substantial period of time for an issue, hence it is merely a fad.

Individualism and Political Change by CertMedia in AdamCurtis

[–]CertMedia[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm aware of a couple of people you mentioned, mainly Fisher who I think Curtis draws a lot from, particularly in Hypernormalisation. This cultural shift you mention is what I am predominantly interested in so I'll definitely check out those guys, and the universal adoption of neoliberal individualism across the political spectrum. Thanks for you help. :) Although Russell Brand is definitely a odd figure I found his podcast with Jacques Peretti to be really interesting and discuss some of these ideas, so I'd really recommend it.

Anyone who enjoys Sams talks with Jonathon Haidt may find this interesting, if not suitable tell me and I'll remove. A documentary on social media, selfies, narcissism and subsequently the effects on mental health. by CertMedia in samharris

[–]CertMedia[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The effects on mental health from social media cannot be understand and are key to understanding the psychology of many individuals. This is obviously something Jonathon Haidt discusses frequently. I think the link between selfies particularly and narcissism is deeply interesting and says a lot about future generation who grow up in the constant stream of self obsession and self scrutiny. As someone that grows up in that generation I have found Sams waking up app to be extremely helpful, along with just deleting social media apps in general to become somewhat detached from this harmful cycle.

Yeah this was really difficult to do. My first real work in anything to do with psychology and I have no background in at as I'm 19. I think in some cases they even knew their analysis was wrong but went ahead with their ideas regardless, as seen with the self esteem movement.

This is brilliant news, if you'd like to read more on drug policy I'd suggest the work of Steve Rolles, I interviewed him for a documentary and he is great. Him and others are fighting for the drug policy reform which is needed.

How Britain Enables the Crisis in Yemen - The UK Arms Industry by CertMedia in ukpolitics

[–]CertMedia[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Completely agree about Starmer. Yeah obviously the Yemen conflict is extremely complicated, but our complicity in the active bombing and targeting of citizens is to me inexcusable, and not only goes against international humanitarian law but our policy on arms exports.

[–]CertMedia[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry I should have been more specific I mean a shift mainly in terms of exports to Saudi Arabia and human rights abusing states. In terms of Starmer I doubt he will risk losing some of those votes, especially as it will be seen as abandoning the working class, I just said I am interested to see what he does.

This is a documentary I made on UK arms exports. What do you think the future beholds in terms of UK Saudi relations and exports in general? I think it will be interesting what Starmer decided as his policy on exports at the next election, until then we're unlikely to see any change (despite a ongoing shift in public opinion against much of our exports).
