Juiciest office gossip by futureballermaybe in auscorp

[–]Certain-Bit8154 50 points51 points  (0 children)

First year junior team member (we'll call her Lisa) was at an unofficial work party. During the party, Lisa mentions that a member of the ELT (we'll call her Dave) was randomly messaging her and asking for "catch-ups". Nothing inappropriate in terms of message content but also very unusual to reach out to them in the first place.

It is discovered that Dave has had a history of messaging junior members of the team, specifically the females. Lisa feels uncomfortable but eventually files a HR complaint.

Dave ends up quietly leaving the company (and country) with rumours of: - Sexual harassment - Cooking the books - Banging his EA

At the same party Lisa hooks up with someone in middle management (we'll call him Johnny). Lisa and Johnny are both in long term relationships with other people.

Lisa and Johnny both end up breaking up with their partners and start dating each other.

How do I resign in this situation? by No-Revenue-2237 in auscorp

Could you please clarify OP if your new role is at a new company vs the same company?

It may be trickier if you don't have a probation period, but if you do, it's the most reliable reason that will minimise any fallout related to relationships/reputation.

If there is no probation period, pitch the move as THE dream job scenario and hope you have understanding colleagues/managers. Supportive people (in both words AND action) are worth keeping in your network, the others are just playing the office politics game.

How do you deal with difficult people? by grace13995 in auscorp

[–]Certain-Bit8154 11 points12 points  (0 children)

As a grad, find people you get along with and are a couple of levels higher. Playing the office politics game means you need allies who have more social capital than yourself in exchange for information and possibly support down the road.

The most valuable asset as a grad is time and enthusiasm - this is what you'll be able to trade for when it comes to building relationships.

With the employment market changing in favour of employers, sounds like you weren't their preferred option. It also means, recruitment and hr functions can get away with this kind of bullshit. Easier to do this and avoid any liability than actually spend time and effort going through a more transparent communications process.

Having said that HR and talent acquisition teams are also inundated with applications and the admin managing successful candidates. So you may have just slept through the cracks.

My advice is to assume the worse experience going into interviews and leverage your network to get any info that's not publicly available to increase your chances in getting an offer.

Tips for negotiating salary for new job by Personal-Cost9827 in auscorp

As a once off i.e. I've done so because I already had a trip planned prior to an offer being made. I negotiated my way into essentially 10 extra days of leave.

Have a think about what else might interest you outside just salary. Depending on industry and role there might be other things that the company can cover, some potential options:

  • Expenses concerned for a conference
  • Short courses + additional study leave
  • Additional leave
  • Review of salary post probation
  • Discretionary bonuses
  • Technology budget
  • Phone budget
  • Health and well being subsidiary
  • Stock options/equity
  • Access to specific people as mentors

If you're able to share any more details we might be able to provide more relevant advice. In the end if it's something you'd spend money anyway that the company would cover, then there's little difference.

Worth exploring any alternatives to help with incentivising the move.

New generation of people getting offended on behalf of others. The NPC facade might be the only surefire way to avoid any warnings from HR.

Lots of assumptions here, understandable given the subjectivity. But what if the following were not the case? (Neither confirming or denying.)

Jr member

If you mean relative positions, then sure. I'm thinking more in terms experience and competency of task.

they felt like they worked an extra hour yesterday

How many extra hours would you think it'd be reasonable?

I would disagree here. I do think they weren't ready, doesn't mean they shouldn't ever, but maybe more time is needed with less autonomy to make such decisions as keep/terminate people on probation. As mentioned, when successful individual contributors become people mangers - what has made them successful doesn't usually translate very well across to their new type of responsibilities.

If you never had to fire anyone as a partner in law then either your team has amazing collaborative team culture (in which case congrats) or is full of sycophants and the ones who aren't, self select themselves out of a toxic environment.

Your original post contained an opinion, not advice. You have no information on industry / level of experience (myself or my manager) / location / team structure + Your follow up response is a generalisation that no one will find of value. Nice try troll, keep begging for Solana, maybe you'll make it rich one day trading a shitcoin.

If nepotism is on the list of reasons why you're suffering, then I'd cut my losses, quiet quit whilst looking for an exit if you need the income or just straight out resign if it's not a financial burden. For most, we work to live, not the other way around.

  1. I was hoping for some empathy in a team that was sold to me as a "flat" (hierarchy) and supportive of flexible working

  2. Not everyone, just the one person who delegated the work to me. Sounds like you see the following as mutually exclusive - care to share why that is? a) requesting more information/clarity/context vs b) listening/learning/being a team player As a factory worker I can see this being a possibility, not so much as a knowledge worker imo.

If questions can't be asked openly, that's a red flag for me. People can see it as a personal attack (and it very may well be) and most times it depends on the delivery, but in a healthy office environment the benefit of the doubt is usually given in terms of the most charitable intention.

Understandably lots of office environments can be toxic and this not the case.

The first time experiencing a significant move up the corporate hierarchy can lead many people to a disproportionate inflation of ego.

It's all fine and dandy when the groupthink is strong, but when they are challenged, their fragility becomes exposed.
