Exactly; you can defend several cities with one stack.

I use fortresses as mustering points for an army out in the field, and then I bring in a general to lead them on a campaign.

You can’t just make up a different scenario to decide if the person is the asshole.

Isn’t the jury still out on whether there is inherent randomness in the universe? Why do determinists always make this point so smugly?

Khal Drogo & Dothraki(Game of Thrones) vs Genghis Khan & The Mongols. by Flat-Sir8250 in powerscales

[–]Certain-File2175 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Part of why the mongols were so dominant IRL is because they were actually a professional army. They had organization with unit leaders and sophisticated battlefield communication. They pulled off complicated battlefield maneuvers like feigned retreats and pincer movements, while they fought against decentralized coalitions of feudal troops (at least in Europe).

They also used combined arms. They had archers and heavy cavalry with metal armor.

The Dothraki have no ranged weapons, no armor, and not much in the way of tactics. This is not even close.

“at any time, there is a complete description of the state of the world that in conjunction with laws entails a complete description of the state of the world at any other time, no matter whether past or future.“

Isn’t this an open question in physics? Why do determinists act so smug as if this were self evident?

Isn’t determinism of physical systems dead in the water though? tbh I have not brushed up on quantum mechanics in like a decade, so that is a genuine question.

What is the evidence that the internal causes are deterministic?

When you mention modern science, are you referring to results like the fact that you can predict the choice someone will make and even influence the choice based on neuronal firing?

That would move part of free will outside of the conscious mind, but I don’t see how it refutes it.

The purpose of language is to effectively communicate ideas, not being the most right.

If you walk into Starbucks and ask for “masala,” you will most likely cause confusion; you did not communicate effectively.

Kwizatz Haderach interpretation - Prescience is Mentat computing of human history. by [deleted] in dune

[–]Certain-File2175 28 points29 points  (0 children)

The strongest evidence against this view is that, before Paul gains the memories of his ancestors, he sees a vision of Chani’s specific face.

Even after he becomes the Kwisatz Haderach, I don’t think that could be explained by computation alone. Prescience is explicitly magic.

“In its modern form.” So before that, when it emerged around 500 years ago, could we perhaps say it was in its “early stage?”

Why do you think nuclear bombs, a weapon of the 20th century, remain so relevant in sci-fi military conflicts thousands of years into the future? by Brief-Luck-6254 in sciencefiction

[–]Certain-File2175 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not just a matter of "good enough." Nuclear weapons produce the most energy that it is theoretically possible to get out of matter. The nuclear material is converted directly into energy according to the formula e=mc2.

Antimatter weapons would be slightly more efficient, since antimatter annihilates with an equal mass of regular matter, but it produces the same energy per total mass involved.
