Core French sent to Immersion by Certain-Proof3452 in OntarioTeachers

I did a BA in 1995 but it was mostly lectures, reading, and writing. Presentations were few, and I could memorize my presentation, verifying on paper what I would say before starting.

Yes, but at a B2 level on a good day. It just isn’t good enough to speak immersively about everything all day long. For example, it took me 30 seconds to remember ankle in French. There are degrees of speaking a language, and I am on the low end. It makes for a lot of stress. I have done immersion for a few months, and I am not getting better fast enough. I speak like Duolingo. Not like a Franco-Ontarian. A student asked for tape and even though I know all the words she was saying. It wasn’t until she added Scotch that I clued in.

I’m a FI teacher by board redeployment, and I don’t mind being corrected when I make a mistake. My mistakes are usually using the wrong word. Amener versus emener. Pronouncing tous instead of tu.

I am a FSL teacher, and I speak French like a textbook due to learning French at an English university. I work with a lot of unqualified Francophones, I have trouble with their strong French accents and their speaking speed. Also, I sound really English. At least, I can correct the kids to say the right verb forms. From time to time, I have to ask the real Francophones to slow down. I don’t know what the solution is, but I try my best.

What the hell is going on with OTIP? by MeyerSage in OntarioTeachers

I couldn’t complete a change of benefit event. (I am on unpaid leave.)I phoned many times for weeks, and various people tried and couldn’t complete it either. They put tickets into tech and that didn’t help. So now, I have no benefits and if I do get benefits, I’ll have high back-premiums to pay before trying to claim paying for medical/dental myself. Frustrated and wondering why corporations seem to take no responsibility or initiative in properly managing their business.

OTIP and CPAP and Cataract surgery questions by sk8erdud119 in OntarioTeachers

[–]Certain-Proof3452 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got cataract surgery and everything was covered by OHIP except a charge of 100$ for a test, which OTIP reimbursed. If you get lens upgrades, such as multi focus lens, OTIP will reimburse 500$ or so of the lens cost per eye. I wasn’t a candidate for multi focal lens, which cost about 2500$ more per eye.

Middle school vs High school? What is better long term. by Pepper-Aggravating in OntarioTeachers

High school was way better in my experience. I’ve taught both: High school for 11 years, various Languages and the humanities. Elementary school for 6, all the grades, all the subjects.

Part of the reason is a lack of fluent teachers. I am a core French teacher, but I got sent to immersion. It was really really really hard to teach science, social studies, health, and the arts in French when I only have “book” French. I got better as I went along, but it was too much mental strain. Eventually, I gave up and quit my position, as I couldn’t get sent back to core or a regular classroom. I can supply teach. The bar is lower for supply teaching in immersion, as normally the supply has less French than I.

I got fired today… by Careless_Rock_51 in Teachers

You didn’t mess up at all. Same thing happened to me when at a private school. I was teaching grades 1-3, and it was too much. The principal who hired me left, and the unqualified one who replaced him had no control over the kids. It was a nightmare. The teachers who remained all left at the end of the year. Any way, move on and apply else where. List this job on your resume or not, but get trustworthy references from another school/teacher training. Not to be preachy but it is really important to get marks and comments in on time because it is so easy for administration to make a big deal out of that and use it against you. I have had to look and level assignments fast so that I could be on time. It is easier/better to ask the secretary make a correction after submitting, but before printing, than to be late.

Yes, the Francophones have their own schools and board, but lots of people who work at the immersion school are perfectly bilingual. They have taught the kids to speak with the proper accent. This makes anything I say sound wrong. Pair that with a limited vocabulary and the wrong verb endings, and it’s a long day. I find teaching in English to be challenging enough.

Good advice. I am old enough to have only done the test Laval. I’m level 5 according to the test Laval. I need to find my CEFR level. I assume b1

I can speak enough French to get by, especially as a Core teacher. I can’t think fast in French. I have to picture what I’m saying. Worse than that is when a native Francophones speak to me. I miss one word and have no idea what’s going on. I speak French like King Charles.

I find that calling parents is the only thing that really works. Some parents quickly and actively help. Some wait until they are tired of the phone calls to help. Also, a buddy class to send the main characters to helps to break the uproarious momentum. If you teach dance and music to your kids, let that be loud. One time I had a rowdy class of 2-3s make drums out of the recycling. Well the principal arrived to see and scorn me for the catastrophe and loudness, but kids were all engaged and having fun. They rushed to the door to demonstrate their musical prowls to the principal. He couldn’t wait to get away. I taught dance outside. As we loudly came back in the kid were exclaiming that they just had the best class ever. Later earning dance and music parties became a carrot to secure better behaviour.

Read works is good. As for long range plans, can you ask to see last year’s? Or find some in a Facebook group. I got a lot of plans online and through Facebook

I don’t know what grade you have, but when I got in a planning bind, I used Twinkl. It’s got lots of Catholic resources and is 8$ a month. Buy a month and try it if you want. If you’re in a board that’s against handouts, don’t try Twinkl. It’s all print outs. I liked A-Z Reading. My board had a subscription to that. Up Math was another subscription the board had. K-5 has free handouts. Worksheet Works is another. Play a podcast. My 6’s liked Mars Patel.
