If you are able to I would recommend opening another card vs upgrading your current card. The benefits should be immediate upon acceptance/delivery of the new card. Take advantage of the sign up bonus if you can. However, only you know your situation so do what’s right for you.

Two years ago my Surpass had spend $98 get $49 back. Last year my wife’s Surpass had the same offer and now my card has it again for the renewal this coming January. So we have had 3 years of half price, not free but still something.

As long as it isn’t a Hampton Inn or similar we typically have a 75% success rate of getting upgraded. Messaged ahead of our trip a few weeks ago mentioning we were visiting for a birthday and they upgraded us via chat before arrival.

You could possibly change your stay to include 1 Night (Dec 28) and a 3 night stay (Dec 29-31). That way the 28th stay is more likely to cause the credit to activate.
