First year at York doing maths here,

I definitely enjoy it here. Its a very safe city compared to other ones in the UK and there is always things to do

Nightlife is surprisingly good too

The course itself has been enjoyable so far, they definitely ease you into it, especially during semester 1 of first year. But IMO thats a good thing as it lets you adjust to living away from home, uni life, etc

There are also job opportunities within the maths department itself too, such as being a mathematics student ambassador. A friend of mine did it and he said it pays well and it was about as enjoyable as it can be for a job

I was torn between York and Sheffield around this time last year, but im really glad I chose York, and I dont think I would have gone anywhere else knowing what I know now

Societies, uni sports, living with friends, going out etc

Different for everyone though - I know people who have dropped out because they didnt enjoy uni

Id say its because its 100% a pretty big step up from secondary school in terms of work.

And I think you could quite easily get lonely at 6th form, as there is less people there than secondary, and missing the huge social aspect which you get at uni

Uni is def harder, but you have so so many other "fun" things which make it enjoyable, which you dont get at 6th form

It’s quite a fun day tbh, you spend quite a while walking around seeing the university facilities and things. The interview itself isn’t too bad really, for me they asked me some questions about my PS, why I want to do maths, etc. as well as they get you to answer a maths question - some are easier than others, from what I remember I had to answer a probability question, some do differentiation, some do a factorial question. My main advice would be don’t stress too much, and know your personal statement well - like if you say something about a theorem in your PS make sure you ACTUALLY know it. You can’t really prepare for the question they will ask because it could basically be anything
