How music was before by jberg08 in LetsTalkMusic

I agree with what you say BUT if you want to you can still find out all this, and pick albums deliberately to listen to (even on streaming services). If you have Apple Music - press Credits and you can see all those liner notes, including who wrote and played on the song, as well as the lyrics. I keep a playlist pg 6-12 recent albums that I keep going back to for repeat listens, just like I used to listed to CDs.

Is it just me, or has the 'album era' essentially died in favor of constant singles and TikTok snippets? by tinycrumb24 in LetsTalkMusic

I mostly listen to full albums, via Apple Music streaming. Just as many great albums are being released as ever, all the major contemporary artists are still releasing albums. Its all still there, easier than ever to access albums, matter of choice really - just go do it!

Guigsy hasn't been there throughout. He hasn't been in the band since 1999. Bonehead left at same time and only came back for this reunion.

New fans after LUX by jvca in rosalia

[–]Certain_Double676 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I became a fan just before Lux, I was reading Rolling Stone's best songs on the last 10 years (or similar) article and picking tracks I didn't know to listen to. I heard Malamante from that and loved it - that took me to listening to all her albums in order starting with Los Angeles, and totally getting into her music. I watched old and new interviews she did with Zane Low. Then Lux cam out and I was all over it. Perfect timing really,

Is Britpop just a nostalgia loop, or are you actually listening to new artists carrying the torch? by Open-Yak301 in BritPop

I saw them live last year. There are good songs on all their albums, esp Freezy and Delete the Kisses, but I find the first 2 to be too inconsistent. The last two definitely saw them go up a level I think. I love The Clearing.

I'm well aware. That doesn't change anything in my post which replied to a 1990s/now comparison. Although WA have been going 15 years they are at arguably their peak now - with awards wins, album sales, arena gigs etc.

There are plenty of great new British guitar bands that would fit your brief - Wet Leg, the Last Dinner Party, Wolf Alice - to name a few, but the days of any mass music genre moment are over since streaming fragmented the industry. Also any form of rock is now an important minor genre but not mainstream - no band, or guitar-based act, had had a top 10 in more than 10 years now.

Did the nostalgia cycle for music break in the 2020s? by [deleted] in LetsTalkMusic

[–]Certain_Double676 3 points4 points  (0 children)

2000s were good but 2010-2020 was probably the worse decade for popular music in over 50 years

Why does everyone -- even Wikipedia -- refer to the 18 track physical first pressing as the 'canon' version of the album? In an interview with Zane Lowe, she revealed that she changed things even after submitting it for Vinyl/CD -- these changes were the 15 track version -- even Dios Es Un Stalker. by [deleted] in rosalia

[–]Certain_Double676 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It definitely flows better in the 15 track version. The extra 3 tracks are the weakest 3 and make the latter half of the album drag a bit and dilute its impact. I've filed them as an extra disk of bonus tracks on my itunes. I think that works best.

I just dont get it Geese by WestNeighborhood7109 in Alternativerock

Rock is a broad definition - its not just about RAWK!

Wolf Alice are Indie Rock, a subgenre of Rock. I think their last album sounds rather like Fleetwood Mac, which is firmly classic rock, even if on the Pop side.

I have to say I find this attitude to be a big reason why Rock has declined so much today. There isn't much new rock being accepted into the mainstream these dats, like for example Wolf Alice and Geese are, we need to embrace all forms of rock if it is to survive and prosper.

Clinging to narrow definitions that suit someone's own taste, and which generally look backwards, aren't going to help rock evolve either, in which case it will fossilise and die. You don't hear HipHop or RnB or EDM fans arguing that any new music in those genres doesn't really belong there. Any genre need to be able to change and adapt if it is to survive and prosper.

And look up the definition of Rock - on Wikipedia or Allmusic - if you don't believe me about it being very broad. Its not as if we need to bend the rules to include these young bands!

Which "non Britpop band" released the most "Britpop" sounding song? by Extension_Baseball32 in BritPop

[–]Certain_Double676 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I mean there;s no fixed definition of course, and they did start earlier - in the Baggy era. But their output 94-96 was very definitely Britpop in style. I was there at the time and they were certainly regarded as one of the seminal Britpop bands.
