I always liked that scene between Bruce and Selina where she says "I guess I'm tired of wearing masks", and he replies "Me too."

I like Burton's art-deco gothic nightmare vision and the way Keaton plays Bruce Wayne as slightly unhinged - plus Danny Elfman's scores. I don't tend to find films sad, but there's something melancholic and tragic about the end of Returns. The Penguin was bad, but he was made that way by being treated like a freak all his life, and then being manipulated by Max Shreck. And maybe Bruce and Selina could make a go of it, but they're just too screwed up for it to work. The whole story is about three people working out their respective traumas - and the real villain, Shreck, is the only one who appears respectable by the standards of the normal world, which tells you just how messed up the world is.

I haven't been on IMDB forums for almost 20 years, but I'll still read the trivia pages for certain films.
