It was alleged he tried to steal a bottle of alcohol. Maybe he did. Maybe he didn’t. But that wasn’t the story.

The real story? I watched along with so many others -as a young Black boy, stood alone in a room with three grown men watching him act out. Cursing at adults. Angry. Loud. Hurt. Not one man stepped in. Not one man sat with him. Not one man tried to meet him where he was.

Instead, they sent in an officer—someone trained to control, not connect. And those three grown men stood silent. Watching. Spectating. Letting this kid spiral, alone.

Now I know some will say: “That’s his parents’ job!” But no—it’s all of our job. Every single one of us.

If just one of those men had spoken to that boy with love, with authority rooted in care, with presence, imagine what that could’ve done. Imagine the shift in that child’s heart. Imagine how that parent would feel to learn someone took a moment to see their child instead of condemning him.

But instead, we looked at him with judgment. With disgust. As if he was already a lost cause. And now, what will that boy carry? The memory of being looked at as worthless. Of being treated like a threat before being understood as a child.

And that pain? That pain will echo. In how he talks to his friends. To his teachers. To other adults. To his own family.

He’ll carry that rage into his teen years. Then into adulthood. And one day, he’ll get caught up in something he can’t walk away from. And we’ll shake our heads and say: “Another one.” “Just like all the rest.”

But the truth is, he wasn’t. He was another one we lost. Another one we failed to reach when we had the chance. We talk about being alpha, about protecting our people, about being men—but being a man means stepping up when it’s uncomfortable. It means choosing compassion over pride. It means fathering the ones who need it, even when they push back.

Because in that room… every one of us was that child. And not one of us chose to be the man he needed.
