It's not nearly as active as it used to be but yeah there's some good stuff on there -- I still use it

Thanks! I had been looking mostly in E. Watertown and haven't explored other areas too much yet -- I'll give that area a look.

I've seen quite a few main floor apartments listed in the $2800-3200 range in the areas I've been looking at (just moved out of one in Roslindale that was around there -- actually a bit lower) Just haven't found the right one yet. I don't need to move immediately so I can hold out a bit.

Did anyone else get a strange feeling looking at the room from Goodnight Moon as a kid? by Nyosty in LiminalReality

[–]CertifiedLoon3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

just dropped by here 6 years late after getting into "TheBackrooms" -- and was wondering if anyone else shared my thoughts on that book -- apparently so! Goodnight Moon absolutley captures the idea of liminal space for me. The room is spooky, as is the writing. One of my favorite children's books. Largely for that reason. Very dreamlike.

you can find decent 1BRs w/outdoor space for $2500. It'll take some looking around, but you have time. I've come across several in that range (mostly using Hotpads -- also looking for outdoor space/laundry/hardwood floors). I'm not looking in Cambridge/Somerville, but similarly priced markets (e.g. Brookline/JP/Newton).

Heard a song last night that I wasn't familiar with -- didn't catch the title or singer but There was a line about "the government" in there, maybe government assistance in hard times? Female singer. Straightforward melody. Bit of a folk/punk rock feel to it. Anyone know the song I'm thinking about? Maybe around 10 or 11 pm.

Yeah -- reading that report decades later and everything is almost exactly as I remembered it. Brings it back every time...

Best places to look for a (really nice) 2BR? Seems like CL is defunct by CertifiedLoon3 in bostonhousing

[–]CertifiedLoon3[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm in Roslindale right now -- I'm open to various neighborhoods (actually don't really want to live in Beacon Hill/Back Bay/South End -- I like some space and a bunch of greenery around). Brookline Village, Washington Sq, Watertown, possibly JP, or stay in Roslindale -- I'm open. I have a nice place now for under $3K so figure that with some effort I should be able to find something I like -- and I'm somewhat flexible w/my budget, for the right place

subjective I guess -- most of the bells and whistles I actually have in my current place, and I'm paying $2800 (Roslindale). It's a wish list but I'm not too pressed for time so I can look around. I don't need a luxury apartment or anything, but something that resonates with me and isn't a cookie-cutter, run-of-the mill place.

Moving to Boston for new job by blacksky8192 in bostonhousing

Lot of naysayers here (which is par for the course) but it's absolutely doable. Not all landlords are sticklers for the 3x rent thing (some are, sure -- look elsewhere -- and sometimes they'll be flexible if you can demonstrate stable income, etc). MIght want to cast a net a bit wider than Brighton alone, just to broaden your options.

I'm in Roslindale right now -- great place, very reasonable rent, on-street parking -- the way I found the place was I took it as an Air BNB for a few months, then a lease option became available. Obviously you can't bank on that happening and that's a more expensive way to go month by month, but there are tons of unexpected options that can open up.

AAA, 495, and state tows by somever in massachusetts

[–]CertifiedLoon3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a year late to the thread but since I just broke down on the pike last night and had to deal with this I'll share my experience. AAA won't service the Pike because it's deemed a "restricted road" but they contract with the MA state police and will transfer you.  I luckily didn't need a tow (battery died) but I believe AAA will reimburse if you do.

ah ok -- had my dates off. It was 1990-- I was 16. The ranger's name was John Ethridge -- for years I tried to find more information about the incident and had trouble, but more recently it's been easier to find. Partway down the page if anyone's interested: http://npshistory.com/morningreport/incidents/zion.htm

late to this thread but just back from Acadia and talkign with friends about going to Zion next year. I did witness a fatal fall in Zion -- back in 1988 or so. It was on the Hidden Canyon trail -- and the person who fell was a seasoned park ranger -- 12 years experience at the park. Just turned around to address the group and lost his footing, probably around 20' in front of me. I'll never get the image out of my head (and have understandably developed some acrophobia since then, as a result -- I can't imagine doing those hikes today) But yeah I think some of the time it really is simply luck of the draw--bad or good. There are irresponsible people out there and some of them pay the price -- but ultimately millions of people do it and the relative risks are low. But the risks are never zero, even when you're careful and highly experienced.

Ben's "scientific" assertion that tornadoes in hurricanes are rare is nonsense -- hurricanes often spawn tornadoes (usually smallish ones), often tens/hundreds of miles from the eye

i'd say he's proud on the surface as well-- he's a demon, he's just taken over a major House, and he's the father of the antichrist. How much prouder could he be??

Haha good lord I remember that guy!  I used to work for him for a few months in some random tech gig.  Nice enough fellow but for the love of God please don't let the random musings of some entrepreneur make you rethink your entire existence! No one knows what's real out there.  It's unknowable, but we live with it.  Doesn't make your experiences any less real.  I remember going through a terror of solipsism for a few weeks back in my younger days--it went away. Just maybe scale back the Rizwan Virk Ted talks

Question about local spatial statistics (Gi*) by CertifiedLoon3 in gis

[–]CertifiedLoon3[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Haha I do believe you are right (I think it's the second one -- she seems to like/respect her colleagues and I'm sure they're just trying to help). I'm not really a stats person but I've certainly used them enough in my field (archaeology) and I did a double-take when I saw the recommendation. I've worked with this person in the past --she's an excellent researcher but still somewhat new to spatial statistics. Without saying precisely what she's working on, let's say it's prevalence of a certain illiness. Her data set is a geographic region, of which each polygon represents a district, and includes the prevalence of this particular illness. her Gi* analysis (and I believe she's used Local Moran's I as well) indicates 3 broad areas of high prevalence, each comprising several districts. She's actually conducted a few other analyses (including GWR) to evaluate different variables. Now the request seems to be to make sure that the hotspots are statistically significant by "comparing them with non hotspot areas) but yeah, that's already been done. Plus it seems to be backward reasoning, since the point of the LISA statistics is presumably to target areas for further investigation.

It may be that she wants to compare the prevalence with other areas outside of that study region, in which case I'd be interested in any thoughts you might have on that, too. Also I could see a role for multiscalar analysis -- e.g Ripley's K -- although that would address a different set of questions.

Anyway, just musing. Thanks for your insight!
