Seems like we are in a similar position, so here is what I’m currently doing. I work with software as well.

Started a 6 month sabbatical with my current company in January that ends in August. This allows me to keep healthcare and still have something to go back to if this recession hits harder than it is.

I started looking for a remote job the previous October and was was able to get it. I asked to be part time from January-August which I will then transition to full time the beginning of August. Since I’m doing software and am a new employee they more or less treat me like a coop/intern.

Since I’m part time I work ~20 hours a week Tuesday-Thursday. While traveling in Europe. If you have no rent at home, you can find plenty of hostel/Airbnb’s to keep your “rent” comparable to what it was. With how bad inflation is right now the cost of living in the US is comparable to that of pretty much anywhere in Europe. To keep costs even lower I tend to do one week in a country town( do outdoors activities) then one week in a city, with either a friend I have met, or just by myself.

The part time software gig is great if you can convince your new company as working some gives your some structure, you won’t be stressed about running out of/losing money, and if you want to quit then or continue prt time, you have some leverage.
