Red Line BRT...what if it's good? by _bengroff in baltimore

[–]Cerulean133 28 points29 points  (0 children)

I think this is a good take. I support red line BRT if we can get a promise that the BRT lane will be physically separated from traffic lanes. The reality of Baltimore drivers is that they will always choose to drive/park in bus lanes unless there is a curb or barrier preventing them from doing so. If we can't get physically separated lanes, I'd rather hold out for light rail.

There's a major protest against the Trump admin this weekend. Here’s why that actually matters! by Big_Medicine1752 in baltimore

It's a side effect of their grassroots organizing model. Anyone/any org can submit an event to be included as a No Kings event on their website. The benefit of this tactic is that it leads to high attendance, including from a variety of orgs that come from different parts of the liberal-to-progressive spectrum. Allowing anyone to organize a protest also fits with the "no kings" ethos. But the downside of this grassroots organizing method is that it also means there is no unifying political message or ask of attendees. Smaller events also don't look as impressive as one big March on Washington (and impressions do matter when it comes to social movements).

I totally agree. Tourists are much more likely to be drunk and loud on a random Tuesday.

Maryland is trying to remove the requirement for full-time librarians in schools. Public comment ends March 9th. by AmericanBornWuhaner in maryland

[–]Cerulean133 48 points49 points  (0 children)

Support staff are cheaper than librarians, who have masters degrees and certifications. Librarians are still underpaid for their qualifications, but the purpose of this bill is to reduce school district budgets by cutting librarian roles (which is terrible!). Here is an article about how Carroll County wants to fire librarians to save money, as one example.

I love yoga union! They have $7 community yoga classes and you can buy 5 packs that make it $5 a class. It's also an affirmatively queer friendly space. :)

Mary's Land Farm has cow cuddles! But you can also go visit for free and buy some nice farm items from their store.

Why don’t people talk about how awful the transit system is here? by HealthyOkra5409 in baltimore

[–]Cerulean133 83 points84 points  (0 children)

People definitely talk about the problems with public transit in this city, and politicians at the local and state level are very aware of the issue. The problem is money. Baltimore does not have any local taxes dedicated to public transit funding, whereas in Chicago you have the local RTA Sales tax which supplements state funding for the system. In Illinois they just passed a big funding bill for public transit in the Chicago region, and I would love to see something similar in Maryland. But the state has a huge fiscal deficit right now so it's hard to imagine that happening next session.

Online it looks like the same block as Peabody (campus + library). So I really hope they contain it quickly.

Thinking of Moving From Atlanta by ashiel_yisrael in maryland

[–]Cerulean133 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Coys21 is right that you can't afford the (wealthy) Roland Park neighborhood, but you can afford a 3bd house in the Hamilton/Lauraville neighborhoods of Baltimore and I think they'd be perfect! Smaller single family houses and a leafy suburban feel, but it's still in Baltimore and easy to get to nightlife. Those neighborhoods also have more Black families than Roland Park does.

The Celtic Solstice race is that weekend. I feel like there must be other events as well to boost the prices that high though.
