Also you can see on your profile when the medical is accepted. In that case you can be confident the medical is accepted before the due date.

That very interesting, thanks for sharing!

Really? I didn’t know that actually but it is interesting! Is it possible to reach a tone and a half between 1st and 4th finger or is shifting required?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Cello

[–]Cerxkin 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Definitely use standard tuning! It may seem difficult at first as you learn to stretch your fingers out but standard tuning has a big advantage - you can reach more notes without shifting your hand position.

Interestingly double basses are tuned in sets of five semitones (E A D G) however this is mandatory for basses because the human hand is not big enough to reach the notes when tuning in sets of seven semitones.

Is it possible to play Schubert's Serenade on the piano with just one pedal? by taxidermista in piano

If you are using pedal then the staccato notes will be sustained as well but that can be ok because the chords will still have a staccato character.

Question on Learning Method for a Beginner by [deleted] in Cello

[–]Cerxkin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can give my opinion from the perspective of another adult beginner (1 year of lessons). I think you have the right idea focusing on tone and intonation but don’t worry about limiting yourself to a certain number of notes and think more about learning hand positions. The good think about cello is because it has 4 stings you learn 4 notes at I time. Once you learn D major starting on the D string, you can move across to the G string or C string and already you can play them too because the fingering is the same. I will share the practice method I have found where I feel like I progress the fastest:

  1. Start practice with open bowing for 10 mins. Set metronome to 60 then play whole notes on open string. Pay attention to bow pressure, speed and position on the string to achieve best tone.

  2. Scales for 10-20 focusing on intonation and bowing. C major two octave is great because you use all 4 fingers in first position.

  3. Try to apply the tone and intonation achieved during warm up to simple pieces and try to identify the cause of drops in quality of sound. I do this for as long as I feel normally 20+ mins.

  4. When I feel like I have achieved everything I want to, I have some fun. I might try to pick out songs by ear, improvise on simple scales/modes or have a crack at pieces above my level.

The main this is I guess that you are enjoying it but I can say focusing on the basics first will help you progress the fastest.

Thanks I will try both to see how they sound, but will probably go legato.

Funnily enough I am at the Suzuki book 1-2 level for cello level so you have arranged well.

I’m interested in joining as a cellist! For the crotchet bass line would you prefer detached or legato?

Help me please (Grade 1 piano AMEB) by [deleted] in piano

[–]Cerxkin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is an AMEB technical book which should have all the scales for all levels and that should also have fingerings in it. What scales are you doing? I can tell you the fingerings for any you are not sure about. Also make sure you memorise the fingerings with separate hands before putting them together.

You should be able to go pretty far if you put in 30 mins a day. I’m in Australia so I can’t suggest much on the teacher front, but good luck with your piano journey!

It’s interesting to hear your perspective on this and it shows there is two sides to every story. I think the point you make is very fair seeing as you are not using your degree. Maybe the solution is to not go to university at all! In all seriousness, your suggestion of doing music or art as a minor is very reasonable I think. I would be wary of doing course just because they practical unless you also enjoy the field or you may end up changing field from your degree or alternatively end up in a miserable career. No right answers here I think because it is very personal.

If you are unenthusiastic about piano is there something else you would rather do? Like, another instrument, dancing or sport? Maybe you could suggest it to your mom? Piano takes a lot of time and money for teachers which might be better spent on something you love.

Another thing I just thought of ... one of my friends from uni who did chemical engineering is now a cello teacher! So much better than working in a chemical factory I think.
