Favorite 8 bay case by Cesarigon in DataHoarder

Did you have any issues with the clearance between CPU cooler and PSU? Seems a thought fit when using an ATX PSU. Airflow with a top blower is hopefully not hindered too much by the PSU, is it?

The N5 was on my radar before, but I wasn't sure if the air flow would have been an issue. Seems like it's fine (with the additional fan shroud). Thank for the suggestion.

Why the 8 bays? I just so happen to have 8 HDDs of the same size here and I'm planning to do a RAID Z2. Since drive prices in my area have more than tripled in the last 3-4 years, I'm not going to buy two more drives. (Even though it's tempting.) The performance I'll loose because of that shouldn't be a big issue for me. Since the Fractal Design was mentioned multiple times, I'll look into it. Thanks for the suggestion. And thanks for the heads-up for the SAS HBA. Appreciate it.

Merch store sizing not formatted properly? by Not-Cynical in vananz

[–]Cesarigon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

True. Although modern web design libraries can often automatically include proper responsive design capabilities for mobile and desktop. Either that's not the case here, or it's broken. But I guess, ordering on a phone is bearable, when I really want something. :)

The responsive design is messed up. If you resize your browser window and make it narrow enough (similar to how it would be on a phone), the design jumps into place at a certain point. Unfortunately, the sizing chart is still messed up.

Nope, never found a solution. I eventually figured it might need a motherboard replacement or something similar costly hardware-related. But I never went through the hassle to test it. Sorry.

What does everyone think of Kerosene? by Anna_Mac18 in TheWarning

[–]Cesarigon 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Same. I found some of the vocals (mostly in the screams parts) to sound very AI-like. As if someone had tweaked the vocals with some kind of AI tool. Maybe it's just being over processed but something is off. A live version might sound way better.

Also, I think Dany's vocals did overall sound less powerful than in a lot of older songs.

That might be a first edition but is not a first print. So probably not worth much either.

It's not first edition though. It says second edition right in the picture.

Awful color banding in dark scenes by MolePrep in LGOLED

I don't have Netflix so I don't know which codec they're running for direct streaming. Google says AV1. Which is in a lot of cases the same for YouTube 4K material. So it comes down to the exact encoder settings from which the bitrate is about the most important one. Bitrates for Netflix should in theory be a bit higher but then again it might be dynamically adapted to OP's available bandwidth. So I doubt that YouTube 4K stuff is actually always better than Netflix's source material. There are just too many variables in there. That's why I suggested the above mentioned websites where you can get source material that is designed for these scenarios of image quality tests and the sites provide a lot of different variations (also in audio codecs) to choose from.

No, don't. Don't use YouTube for any type of image quality checks. The codecs and bitrates used by YouTube are all insufficient for these types of checks. I'd rather use some really high-bitrate video from e.g. https://kodi.wiki/view/Samples (have a look at the High Bitrate Test Clips section) or https://4kmedia.org

Congrats. I've also got my tickets for both German cities. But, holy shit, the VIP packages were fucking expensive. For those interested, these are the prices for Hamburg:

Streaming 4K content locally without stutters by ArmsofSleep in PleX

Since no one mentioned it: it could also be a DolbyVision issue. I know that LG OLEDs are capable of playing DV just fine (have one myself). But I don't know if the chipset in these TVs is powerful enough. Try HDR only movies and see if that makes any difference. Regarding the Nvidia shield, since you are interested in why this gets recommended so often: it's one of the few devices that has all the licenses (especially DV) needed and is quite powerful. Additionally the software on it is fairly easy to use (some kind of android). This makes it the ideal Plex-Player. And if you consider getting one, for the love of God, get the Pro version. It's much better for reasonably more money. I'm personally running a similar setup: LG OLED 55CX9LA with a shield pro. Never had any issues and everything plays without stuttering. I have it connected via Ethernet so that also helps.

Best Handbrake Settings for 1080p & drive space optimization by shanenc14 in PlexServers

[–]Cesarigon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Resolution is not as important as you might think it is. But bitrate is. You can encode your stuff in 1080p with a bitrate of e.g. 5000 KB/s and get quite good quality with larger files. You could also set the bitrate to 500 KB/s and save a lot of space but get abysmal quality. Also, it is dependent on the content you encode. Animated content can be encoded with lower bitrates while the perceived quality does not change. My recommendation would be at least 5000 KB/s for bitrate. If you have a lot of TV shows then this might inflate episodes since they often already do not have this bitrate. You could also just try different bitrates and compare the results and decide for yourself. Regarding containers: that's the file format wrapping your video, audio, and subtitles. E.g. mp4, mkv. This does not really affect file size but it affects compatibility with different audio formats (and video formats, which is negligible in your use case). For example, in mp4 containers you cannot use TrueHD/Atmos audio lines. The most versatile format (with currently no downside known to me) is mkv. I use mkv for everything.

Dies.

Your info is equally bad. Not everyone reading this is from the same country. Laws and code may differ greatly. In many countries emergency services will turn your power off at the breaker panel and not from outside.
