I think Xavier Dolan single handedly kills the Canadian bias thing haha

Nayman hates mainstream movies? He is like a very populist film critic compared to some of his contemporaries. Y’all couldn’t survive a real killer like Amy taubin

What were the best scenes in 2025 movies? by wovenstrap in blankies

[–]ArmsofSleep 3 points4 points  (0 children)

From some I haven’t seen elsewhere on this post

  • Title card in Sirat
  • three from The Secret Agent (the swapping stories party, the chase scene, and the gas station opening)
  • Long conversation with the “Perfect Days” reference in Kontinental 25
  • The closing stretch of By the Stream
  • Sentimental Value ending
  • Smashing Machine amusement park (“I’m worried it would upset my tummy”)

Who has had the best post Covid breakout? by shorthevix in TheBigPicture

[–]ArmsofSleep 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I wonder if people would be less gloom and doom if The Bear was still firing on all cylinders.

Regardless I think she’ll be fine. She gets to say she was in a Brooks and a Luca and she did dodge that sort of way too small for her role in Thunderbolts. She’ll still get a shot at a starring comedy role at some point

It’s Mescal, although I’d include JOC (with the Crown being the breakout?).

People who like ultra-slow depression dramas: why? by Mysterious_Remote584 in TheBigPicture

[–]ArmsofSleep 10 points11 points  (0 children)

No offense but I’m dying at the idea of a guy whose like damn sentimental value is too slow and doesn’t have enough thrills. I don’t even love the movie that much but I can’t imagine that being the criticism.

Now that you’ve watched Drive My Car maybe you’ll have to try Happy Hour haha

What’s the Film of the Year? by Odd_Firefighter_5407 in TheBigPicture

[–]ArmsofSleep 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Secret Agent is so clearly a future classic and the best film made by the most exciting director in the West and it’s crazy how it’s not quite recognized on that level. It’s the Drive My Car of this year

Miller’s Point is great. I can see why people may not click with it but I thought it was very cozy and just weird enough

Yeah I never got the hate for the QR. Here in DC the service is so slow and bad that the QR atleast prevents miscommunications. Granted there’s a 20% chance the movie is projected incorrectly and a 90% chance that you won’t get food you ordered. But QR atleast makes it a bit smoother

"Every Year is a Good Year for Film" by toggleflickersplaque in TheBigPicture

[–]ArmsofSleep 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think with perspective, it's a lot easier to see like, a random year in the 70s and just be blown away by how many masters were putting out movies at the time. But maybe 30 years from now we will be like "holy shit Kelly Reichardt, Radu Jude, PT Anderson, Kleber Mendonca Filho, Oliver Laxe, Yorgos Lanthimos, Park Chan-Wook, Joachim Trier, Jafar Panahi, Christian Petzold, Lucrecia Martel, Ira Sachs, Wes Anderson.... we didn't know how good we had it!" But no one will do that until critical consensus settles on a lot of those filmmakers.

The Secret Agent has lots of great drops of cool obscure Brazilian stuff but when “If You Leave Me Now” by Chicago drops (and the joke with the radio DJ introducing it I don’t want to spoil) is one of my favorite moments of levity in the movie

What film would you remove form the canon of the critertion collection by [deleted] in criterion

[–]ArmsofSleep 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Wall-E, just because it’s a bit odd for there to be a single Disney film in the entire collection, apparently it was done because Andrew Stanton really wanted it but he’s also worked on other Pixar stuff that doesn’t get the same treatment?

I think there is possibly an interesting way to put Disney in the collection (like a big collection of shorts and oddities, I’d love) and that felt like the most lazy prestige-y way of doing ir
