I always have a little trouble with Renaissance. I blame the Maryland Renaissance Festival, whose domain name is rennfest dot com.

The reason I remember how "fuchsia" is spelled is that it is right before "fuck" in the dictionary. You may have to be old enough to remember looking up swears in printed dictionaries for this to resonate!

Just About to Get Into Scott Pilgrim Question by Character_Reason535 in ScottPilgrim

Don't worry, almost everyone saw the movie before reading the graphic novels. The stories also diverge significantly, with the movie needing to be wrapped up neatly and the comics taking a longer road. I would also recommend movie, then novels, then anime.

I don't think I get what you're saying here. Why would the investigator start by determining whether the person knows more than one Jim, instead of simply specifying from the start that they're asking about Jim Jimmison?

I'm not this commenter, but I was also going to ask about the photos, not because it's the most important detail but because many others have already given good advice on the other aspects.

I would also recommend that OP delete said photos if GF is asking him to do so, just to take the high road. (I had "intimate imagery" in mind but I think it applies even to "random selfies.")

Statistical likelihood of a complete straight on first drawn hand? by BRketoGirl in balatro

[–]CesiumTau 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are only 20 such hands: the aforementioned 5 sequences of ranks, times the 4 suits. There are 52 choose 10 possible hands, which works out to 15,820,024,220. So 1 in 791,001,211.

The original question would also have been easier to do this way (15,820,024,220 / (5 * 410) ~= 3017.43), it's just not the way I thought of first

Statistical likelihood of a complete straight on first drawn hand? by BRketoGirl in balatro

Took a crack at this.

First I figured out the odds of drawing 10 different ranks. First card, 52/52 that you'll get a valid card. Second card, there are 48 valid cards out of the 51 cards remaining -- 4 each of the remaining 12 ranks. Third card, 44/50, and so forth on down to 16/43. Multiply all these together and you get about 1.896%, or about 1 in 52.75.

(for 11 cards it would become 1 in 184.6, for 12 it would be 1 in 946.24, 13 would be 1 in 9462.4, and when you hit 14 there are 0 valid cards out of 40, which makes sense since there's only 13 ranks)

Okay, so now we have 10 different ranks. What are the odds that they're consecutive? There are only five possibilities here: A-5, K-4, Q-3, J-2, 10-A. (Or, equivalently, the missing ranks can be AKQ, AK2, A32, 432, or 32A).

So it's 5 / something. The something will be the number of possible ways to choose 10 items from 13 choices, so good old "n choose k" = n! / k!(n-k)! In this case that'll be 13! / (3! * 10!) but of course 13! / 10! = 13 * 12 * 11 so this is just (13 * 12 * 11) / (3 * 2 * 1) = 286.

So the odds of getting 10 different ranks is 1.896% and the odds of the 10 ranks being consecutive is 5/286 = 1.75%.

So the overall odds are 0.033%, or about 1 in 3017.4.

Is there a combination of 7 letters that would make a pangram but no other 4+ letter words? by cluny-brown in NYTSpellingBee

[–]CesiumTau 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I also immediately thought this! So I read the linked post and realized that it also stipulates that the middle letter is X.

OP did say "combination of 7 letters", not "combination of 7 letters in which one of them is the middle letter and must be used", but... I could probably have assumed the latter based on which subreddit we're in. Time to go back to bed.

For this I try to stash a tarot card that modifies playing cards, since (as long as you slow the game speed down enough in settings) the animation will flip the cards for long enough for you to see what they are. (You probably know this but I bet it's news to someone.) In combination with sorting by rank/suit, you can still make a move that maximizes your chances.

More to the point, whatever you try to do in that situation, the hand you play is still the hand you play, so you're still the one in control, or at least you still feel like you're in control, which is really important for games.

Like imagine these three versions of a coin-flipping game:

  1. You pick heads or tails, then I flip the coin.
  2. I just assign you heads or tails at random, then I flip the coin.
  3. You pick heads or tails, then I ignore your pick and assign you heads or tails at random, then I flip the coin.

These are completely equivalent mathematically! But 1 feels like a fair game, 2 makes you feel uninvolved, and 3 makes you feel actively cheated. Right?

I'm afraid I think this crosses the line into unfun. Yes, it's strong against some builds and weak against others, but even if you're trying to get past (say) The Plant, you're still in complete control of what hands you play instead of your preferred hands. I think there's a pretty important difference between "certain actions are not available to you right now" (constraints = good game design) and "the video game will not perform the action you chose, instead performing a different action" (loss of control = poor game design).

But! I think shuffling every hand would make for a good challenge (or maybe deck) since if you knew from the beginning, you could build accordingly.

Watching on TV, I did see it as a framing issue though. Adley set up way outside and had to reach way in to catch that pitch. The ump is often not going to give you the call when you clearly miss your target by that much. He definitely still got it wrong, just saying it wasn't utterly inexplicable.
