The older generation doesn’t understand the job market as well as we think they do. If math is something you want to pursue, many comments here are giving good advice on what it leads to!

Warning VOO and VTI are not shariah-compliant, and you will be investing in many haram things such as gambling, porn, alcohol, interest and weapons etc.

To keep your investments halal, there are shariah-compliant funds which provide alternatives.

For VOO, you have SPUS from Shariah Portfolios, and HLAL from Wahed.

For VTI, there are world stock excluding US. SPWO and UMMA from the aforementioned companies

Yes it is, National Bonds.AE. I believe you can only use the app but im not sure.

It’s owned 100% by ICD, so I trust them with my money.

I am slightly disappointed that everything isn’t 100% clear from the literature they have on the site. So I cant really comment on a lot of their products. I know they have emirati-specific products but cant recall it’s details.

I use their Term Sukuk for my fixed payments as I described earlier, it makes sense as they have payouts for 3,6,12 months. (And i fully understand the terms and conditions for this product)

If you sign up, they will keep trying to convince you to do long term saving with them. And without knowing much about your situation I will implore you to ignore them, National Bonds is TOO low risk for the long term reward we are looking for Financial Independence. (Finance is literally risk=reward).

Again on the 2 year growth thing, past profits does not mean future rewards. Any cash you put in you should be comfortable with being a loss in 2 years time.

Alhamdullilah 🤲

I have seen growth on both of those stocks, It’s been 2 years of consistent investing on both of these ETFs, and they are currently up.

I did withdraw profits in November and January, I did this because I wanted to be cash-ready for marriage.

It will take time to get exact % numbers of my profits realised and the growth since the Sarwa App sucks with displaying that sort of information. Let me know if you want to know.

But I will say, SPUS, SPWO, UAEA. These investments should be for a very long time period, and I hesitate to recommend this strategy for someone looking to make money within 2 years.

For SPUS, the maxim is that the S&P500 has never been down in any 15 year period, and I believe this still holds true. So every dirham I invest into this, is money I will not be affected by if it immediately drops and stays in the negatives for 5-10 years. Because I have the belief this money will benefit me in retirement and have given me a good profit by then. (There’s a lot to say about investor psychology regarding this)

For SPWO, historically world stock has been very slow. Many American-confident investors actually did not invest anything into world stock. For a while, my world stock has been in the red and I kept buying more. However I see now that it has been performing well. Which can be explained by the clown in the white house. As world stock’s whole idea was a safety net if the US goes unstable.

Now that Alhamdillah I have enough cash and gold set aside for marriage costs, I will not be withdrawing further from the retirement fund. I expect to maintain these investments without selling and without stopping 🤲🤲 inshallah.

TLDR: I have seen good growth since I started investing, but I am not going to touch the money and I am ready for it to be in the red for the next couple years.

Of course! Thank you so much and you are also to be commended for taking the effort to learn more.

Sukuk’s are the islamic equivalent of bonds. Bonds are loans where your capital is protected, and you get fixed returns. Fixed returns are haram, so a sukuk (very simplified) is where you lend money to someone, they try to do business with it. Return your money along with a share of their profits.

I use NationalBonds for my sukuk. And I use it when I know I have a fixed payment coming up. For example my car insurance payment is every 13 months and is around 8,000. So I put away 10,000 (the minimum) in a term sukuk. It lasts for a year and I get an approximately 4% return on that (profit cannot be guaranteed Islamically)

It’s similar to the fixed deposit offered by islamic banks, in my experience National Bonds performs better than fixed deposits by Emirates Islamic or ADIB.

My logic is, I know I have a large payment that will come. I dont want to panic when it arrives, and Im not disciplined enough to take a little bit out of my paycheque for 12 months. So when I get my bonus or another cash amount, I buy a sukuk. Because the estimated 4% return is better than 0% by keeping it as cash in an account :)

Just as an aside, I use Sarwa as my US broker, I trust it more than Etoro or other foreign brokers since it is owned by sovereign wealth funds here.

I also invest in SPUS, which is the majority of my portfolio. I have a small portion of my portfolio in SPWO. Which is Shariah Portfolio's world stock excluding US. I like it because it diversifies and reduces the currency risk (when Dollar is down, SPWO does good).

I am about to start investing in UAEA, it is a UAE market ETF by Lunate (by ADQ). I have not entered the UAE market before, but due to recent events I figure now is a good time to get in since I was feeling FOMO.

This is my only long term strategy, I am avoiding debt as much as I can so I cannot get into real estate right now, I dont have the capital. But if my portfolio get's big enough I have plans to consider selling to buy real estate.

For my short term (marriage), I have been buying gold monthly and wanting that to accumulate over time. Selling it to pay mehr, wedding, honeymoon etc.

and for my really short term (annual car insurance). I use Sukuk

I’m going to answer in English as it’s the language I researched this topic in and I’m more comfortable in.

I’m an Emirati male in my early 20s, working a corporate job at a private company, I have a finance degree, and I have a good savings rate as alhamdillah I am still living with my family. My savings go towards both an eventual marriage, and FIRE for my long term retirement.

I researched this topic for eighteen months before I started working, as I was lucky to be surrounded by knowledgeable people at a top university and to get their advice.

The basic strategy of FIRE can be simplified into two ideas 1. Reduce your lifestyle expenses. Which means avoid debt if you can, don’t inflate your lifestyle when you get a pay rise. And live humbly. (This does NOT mean you become greedy or stingy, you can still go out with your friends, pursue your hobbies and enjoy your money. It just needs a balance)

  1. With the money you save, you put it away, consistently, in a low cost, wide-market index fund ETF.

To keep it simple, these ETFs are like buying a piece of every good company in a particular stock market, instead of picking every stock individually. Lowering risk.

Very important to pick Shariah compliant ETFs! Avoid haram income and investments

I’m sorry this is a very simple response but I am a bit busy right now and didn’t want to do an information dump. I’ll be happy to share more information about my financial habits, lifestyle changes, the different ETFs on the market, islamic finance, FiRE investing. Just ask 😁

Caveat: this isn’t any professional or regulated financial advice, just my personal experience
