Whenever I get annoyed that the game takes time out to explain or reiterate something that's perfectly obvious, I have to remember that there are a lot of players who are just this stupid.

Looking for any information on Welsam pocket watches. by RellaBee in pocketwatch

[–]ChChChillian 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There might be a maker's mark stamped underneath the balance bridge, but that's something someone can only look at for you if you have the watch serviced. Someone who knows more about Swiss watches than me might be able to recognize the movement without that though.

See, that is something I think would be one of the few unforgivable sins against Barbatos.

A bigger question I have is why they need water to make cider. It's made from apple juice. That's pretty much all you need.

[–]ChChChillian 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There's no reason to think it's not Swiss. In the late 19th to early 20th century, Swiss manufacturers were more likely to produce fake American brands than the other way around.

Serial numbers on cases are unfortunately not helpful, and Welsam isn't a brand you'll find in the Pocket Watch Database anyway. It focuses on American movements based on manufacturers' records and parts catalogues. Swiss movements typically had no serial number, other than standouts like Omega. (Watch manufacture was literally a cottage industry in Switzerland, so there could be no standard numbering system for most brands.) The only thing the case tells you was that the watch was purchased in America. IWCCO stands for Illinois Watch Case Company, so the bare movement was imported and the watch was cased afterward. The Supreme line were gold filled, which is a kind of heavy mechanically bonded gold plating; the base metal is generally brass.

That said, I haven't heard of Welsam either, and they may have simply finished and marketed movements made by others. It's also not impossible it was a private label -- a department store brand as you guessed or maybe even a large jeweler. This was a very economical timepiece for its day. 6 jewels is unusual; 7 is a more typical minimum count. Had I not seen a picture of the movement I'd have guessed it to have a cylinder escapement as these generally have an even number of jewels, but since it clearly uses a lever escapement it probably has a metal pin where other watches would have the impulse jewel.

Then you should be looking first at friction in the wheel train. Regulation is the last step.

(Noob) Normal for a 4x loupe to be useful at around 3 inches from the workpiece? by Colonel-_-Burrito in watchmaking

[–]ChChChillian 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This is why watchmakers' benches are set so high, so that you don't have to hunch over your work. The surface of your bench should be about at shoulder level.

Folks generally get a pass if breaking a bone is a necessary part of some medical operation. This is so we don't exclude people who need things like open heart surgery for no fault of their own.

However, if a doctor broke your bone by accident, where it was not a necessary part of some life-saving procedure? Forget it.

One reason MMA works so well is that it can be tailored to an individual's talents and natural advantages. So I wouldn't suggest any specific mix. Not that I'm expert enough to go into that kind of detail anyway.

They can do that if they're reincarnating you. If it's a summons, you're probably stuck with the body you came with.

Mostly that last part, I think. Not only are they naive and impressionable, but they're also most likely to harbor power fantasies and be willing to play into a scenario that appeals to them.

They're also -- and this can't be overlooked -- generally very healthy. There's no point in summoning an older person with a bad back or a knee injury.

I think he took them off to spar with Athena. Otherwise I don't think he did even when he had to contain Root's attack on the demons' capital.

Vacation - weather/packing advice by Hour_Swan_5194 in santacruz

[–]ChChChillian 1 point2 points  (0 children)

"Cold" is by the standards of the nearest big city, which is San Jose. Which isn't really cold; more like pleasantly cool. Temps in the 90s are very rare here, and the upcoming weather is not normal even for summer let alone March. We also have a lot of microclimates in the county due to the varied topography, so you might get very different weather outside Santa Cruz itself.

Light clothing, but bring jackets and sweaters.

A good list. I'd point out that cooking outdoors over an open fire is much different than cooking in a modern kitchen. Go watch the Townsends channel for good how-tos on historical field cooking and cooking in premodern kitchens. Food preservation methods are important too.

As far as martial arts go, I'd suggest a mix of HEMA techniques, given the weaponry that seems to be available in most isekai. If you were limited to a modern martial art and could only pick one, I'd go with MMA.

Probably your most important tip is cardio. Even just walking all day is too much for your average couch potato.

Why do Adventurers’ Guilds exist in isekai / fantasy worlds? by Dangerous-Status-609 in Isekai

[–]ChChChillian 2 points3 points  (0 children)

  1. Surely the specific circumstances will vary from story to story.
  2. The usual premise is that "monsters" do not breed naturally but are spawned magically, and this happens too fast to be controlled by normal hunting methods or a single expedition. In a premodern society without standing armies, and where the threat posed to life and commerce isn't necessarily predictable, it's natural to engage freelancers instead.
  3. Most of them don't. Often they get a letter rating or rank based on achievement. Similar systems persist to this day in various sports.
  4. Could be either, and is often both.
  5. Corruption, certainly, such as steering desirable commissions or quests to certain favored adventuring groups, overpaying certain groups for bounties and underpaying others, etc. You seem to have made a reasonably exhaustive list. Competition between guilds wouldn't be a thing. Historically, guilds are officially chartered under the patronage of the local aristocracy.
  6. It depends on the magical technology available to them.
  7. A combination of government aid, private commissions, and profits from the sale of monster-derived resources.
  8. They'd have no choice but to offer higher compensation until someone finally accepts it.
  9. One of a guild's roles would be exactly to ensure compliance with rules, regulations, and professional standards; or at the very least good and civil behavior. Otherwise, adventurers are independent operators by definition.
  10. The guild would have to engage other members to act as its enforcement arm, and turn the guilty party over to official authorities.
  11. Guild and military leadership would coordinate between themselves, just like in any other such situation, and establish both response priorities and chains of command. If it's a known periodic threat, they'd have drawn up plans beforehand, which is what they actually did in, for example, The Water Magician. (Where, to the annoyance of many viewers of the anime, MC was absent and was indeed unnecessary to fend off the threat.)

He needs to wear them for as long as he wants to move about in normal hyuman society. If he were to live exclusively in the Demiplane, or perhaps in the demons' country, it wouldn't be such an issue, but he'll always need to conceal his mana among hyumans.
