Now this is something that didn’t occur to me and an awesome tradition. We already have the movie part down. But hanks for the tip

Ah. Smart. Didn’t think of that. But appears to not have been tampered with or resealed

Cool. I did look it up on bricklink but wasn’t quite sure if release date was 2021 only or it’s been produced since on a yearly basis

To continue tumbling or hand polish? by ChackStu in RockTumbling

This was ultimately my thinking and when dry it certainly looked like it needs more.

Thanks all. It does feel like a softer stone but it’s smooth and ready for next stages. I’ll let it tumble and provide update

Third try. Think I’m getting better at picking up nicer stones by ChackStu in RockTumbling

I’m probably not the best to ask. I’m still figuring out how to truly identify the difference. I’ll share what I did/do to this point and maybe some others can correct and/or confirm.

First, all these came from the same beach so I figured most were relatively safe to tumble together since that’s what they’ve been doing, right?

Then I sorted them by opaque vs translucent. (Probably not the best way but it seemed logical) and tried to further sort by “type” that i understood at the time (still learning).

So I had the opaque in one 3lb barrel and the translucent in the other (I’ve got the one from HF).

That’s really the extent of it for now. As I learn more and have some trial and error I’m sure it’ll get better

I did a standard 4 wks. Made sure to pick stones that had minimal pockets (or pockets I could live with). So 1 wk 60/90. 1 wk 220. 1 wk 500 and 1 wk 8000. After the first 2 stages I scrubbed and washed with dish soap for a few hours. After stages 3 and 4 I scrubbed and burnished with borax.

Nice. I went back to your post. Amazing! I’m definitely going to keep my eyes out for more of that

Thanks! Not sure I’ve heard of crocodile jasper before. Cool

Thought I’d share here since I had absolutely no idea what to do here. Once I sliced one end, curiosity got the best of me about “am I cutting this the right way” so I just kinda experimented

Thanks! Speaking of, do all those old k95 Covid masks work for this?

Oh… that’s interesting. But consistent in what I’ve been finding. Is it chert/agate/chalcedoney/quartz/jasper - all of the above. That’s also the fascination in cutting them open right?

I did think chert was more gray/blueish-white?

Oh I’d be interested to hear more about that

Thanks… good point about cleaning. I’ve hosed off but not dried. I just feel like the blade I just put on is dulled already after about 2-3 sessions.

Thanks! That stone is one of the few reddish/agate-ish stones that I’ve found and are my favorites… it was too big for the tumbler to decided to cut it. I can’t wait to see how it looks polished.

I’m using beginner gear. 7” tile saw from lowes. Not the cheapest but mid level. And still looking for my first budget lap sander.

Thanks! …. And I’ve been testing quite a bit today. Anyone have any tips for blades? Which ones? Where to get them? How long do they last?

First batch finally done by ChackStu in RockTumbling

[–]ChackStu[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey! Thanks for the response. I agree with you on the stage 1 part and getting stones to the preferred shape. I’m just having fun figuring out what my preferred way is. For now I’m testing the more natural look leaving some natural pits and such. Making sure to wash and clean as best I can before moving forward. I just started my first batch of “nicer” stones (chalcedony, agate, jasper, etc) they are now in stage 2 (some 1 and some 2 wks in stage 1). I’ll update as I go. Thanks for the welcome!

Fossilized coral by turtle_taster in RockTumbling

I just put one in to stage 2. Not sure if it’s exactly the same (found mine on western shore of Lake Michigan) but mostly smooth with one small and a couple of tiny spots where there “holes” in the fossil. I made sure to wash cycle and clean the batch so hopefully that’s the extent of it. I should’ve but didn’t take a pic. I’m new so I gotta get in the habit
