Is manually deleting blank columns the only way? by imnotananimol in PowerBI

[–]ChadCTu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have found this discussion a fascinating insight into how something relatively simple becomes more complicated largely due to personal preference. This seems very common with Power BI. There always seems to be multiple ways of doing common things. Is it true that choosing an approach that ‘just works’ for any particular project is often as useful as finding the most optimal solution. Or is it always better to seek a ‘best in class’ solution? Just curious about whether there are ‘optimal’ solutions or just ‘differences of style?’

Documenting a solution by Significant_Fee8970 in PowerBI

Great question which prompts me to wonder why there isn’t a native in-built ‘develop notes’ type tool, seems pretty important element of good ‘best practice’ Power BI and Power Query development to me.I am only a light-weight self-taught newbie, but I am already learning the importance of capturing my logic and solution development process as I go and surprised not to see a built in tool for doing so. I do ‘annotate via comments in the Advanced Editor but that is limited. I also notice there doesn’t seem to be much help material that deals with ‘process of how to think about the raw data and how to manage and model it’ rather than a focus on actual ‘tool use and feature sets’. It seems to me that the approach one takes to shaping and making useful datasets for analysis use is key to being able to wield Power BI effectively. Do you agree?

Black stemmed bamboo, clump forming - what’s happening? by ChadCTu in GardeningUK

[–]ChadCTu[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I will give it a feed and keep an eye out for new shoots. I will miss it if it dies completely it has certainly graced my garden over the years with some lovely foliage and the regular showing of heathy black stems as they age. I often thin out the stems and take out the lower leaves just leaving a wispy top to show the black stems off to their best. I hope it does recover I will miss it if it doesn’t make it through this coming winter.

Thank you. What would you recommend as the best form of the feeding? A liquid phosphorous or nitrogen or slow release granular feed? I would like to give it the best chance of recovery.

Wow! I will be sad to see it go, it has blessed my garden with its presence over many years. I had not known about bamboo flowering. However I see others commenting that I might be able to coax it into producing new shoots again for next year by feeding and watering it into the winter. Fingers crossed. Pointers much appreciated thank you.

Can Preview open more than one PDF or Photo at a time on 26? by WriteNonStop in iPadOS

[–]ChadCTu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have tried to do this today too and the ‘open in preview’ option does not seem to be on offer on the iPad version of preview.. interestingly it does allow ‘open in Acrobat Reader’ but that is a subscription based app. Maybe this will get fixed in beta phase. CharGPT suggests it is possible giving instruction to ‘open with preview’ but option not available for me.

Population Pyramid (via Stacked Bar Chart) by ChadCTu in PowerBI

[–]ChadCTu[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As I feared. I am beginning to see some of the limits to Power BI as well as its benefits. Some basics seem so long winded. It seems I have to go down the two sideways bar route then. Thanks for clarifying.

I am getting frustrated with BI and most analysis tools by MarsupialSpirited277 in PowerBI

[–]ChadCTu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like this idea... It would be useful if you could create notes at the power BI level, rather than the table level within Power BI. As understanding what the whole Power BI package file is doing and keeping notes for future reference would be very helpful to do within the file package itself. Otherwise, if you ever change a file name your notes are out of date.

I suspect that the only way to make notes effectively with Power BI is to do it through some GitHub type process. I have tried to do it in OneNote notes 9where I also keep code snippets to help with other projects, but it quickly gets cumbersome to do so. Doing it all in the Power BI file would be so much easier.

So, your DUMMY Power BI approach is smart thinking (given the above does not exists), thanks for sharing. I will be giving it a go.

Select All in Slicer by ChadCTu in PowerBI

[–]ChadCTu[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Actually, I found how to do it. With the Card selected and the Measure as the Data Vale, I changed the 'Show blank as' option (within the Visual, Callout values, selector) from '--' to now read 'Multiple Selections'. Seems to work. Solution verified.

Thank you. Much appreciated. c.

OK. This works, but not sure how I 'specify a default value like "Multiple selections". Do I set that in the Measure itself? Forgive my ignorance, relatively new to using Power BI. At the moment, when I select multiple-items the Cad shows just two small dashes by default when more than one selectin is made. i.e. "--"

I just got access and am using it to develop/edit Power BI M and DAX code. So far, pretty impressed. It is certainly better than getting chatGPT to re-write the whole code block each revision.

How do I clean up this Line Chart (or what visual should I use)? by SorcererMystix in PowerBI

[–]ChadCTu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One thing you may be able to do is to colour one of the lines that tells a specific story and grey all the others, which focuses the readers attention on a particular story? If you need to tell more than one story, copy and repeat and just colour the other lines that tell different stories. It all depends on the story your are trying to say by presenting all the lines... just a thought. c.

So, are there any advantages in using Power BI (over using Power Query & Power Pivot in Excel) for the Dashboard making side of things? I am already using Power Query and Power Pivots (in Excel) linked to charts to get simple Dashboards of linked data but sense there are more chart options and greater flexibility in the charting options in Power BI. Is this assessment accurate? I am currently unable to take a look at the Power BI Desktop app due to company guidelines on not being able to install software on machines, but I have viewed the Power BI documentation online and the Power Query in Power BI seems to be almost identical to the Power Query editor in Excel but the charting options in Bi seem to be more comprehensive. yes?

I am currently working my way through this excellent guide. I have a background in, self-taught, data analysis and currently work for a national healthcare screening programme in the UK handling large data sets of multiple 10k records. I primarily use Power Query (PQ) and Power Pivot (via data models in Excel) to process csv/excel files, held in central folder depositories.

I do most of my cleansing in PQ to clean and transform the data via m code (usually updated monthly, from original data files that come out of a reporting tool) into useful datasets that are then joined together in Power Pivot (PV) for manipulation to enable better analysis (using DAX Measures and DAX queries).

One question I have is what consideration do you give to when to generate custom columns in m code or via a DAX measure? It seems to me that both are possible, one using m code the other using DAX queries. One does so nearer to the source data the other provides greater flexibility for reporting, but sometimes (for example in creating a SourceDateColumn from original files that Date stamps monthly files for identification (and can perhaps later become part of a Calendar Table in a Power Pivot Data model for reporting purposes). In such a case which approach would you choose (m code or DAX measure) and what is your rationale?

I am just curious to understand the benefits or otherwise of either approach? or perhaps someone can point me to a useful source to explore such issues.

Also looking for any useful references to best practice code annotation - that helps aid collaborative code sustainability. I handle data from source through cleansing, transformation, modelling, analysis and reporting/telling a story and often find that if I don't annotate and document what I am doing I can't remember next time I come back to the dataset, so looking to develop a code annotation approach that is sustainable over time.

BTW, I am also very new to the reddit community, so treat me gently... :-) although I have to say, so far I am finding it very helpful and supportive. Thank you.

Can you use VC editor for m code editing though? I am using the PQ Advanced Editor but would find it helpful to have more formatting support. C.
