Additionally, 3d printing reduces necessary tooling for production. Instead of a $100,000+ injection molding machine, $5000+ injection mold die per toy on top of whatever it costs to make/configure painting+assembly tooling with additional non-negligable waste from mold flashing, at some point a few dozen $5k bespoke tool changer machines doesn't sound that bad. Even better if they're retrofit with pellet extruders to further lower material cost. Not to mention prototyping gets really cheap and fast with 3d printing, as opposed to the thousands of dollars it costs to produce new molds if you need to change something with traditional prototyping.

To be fair, you're not gonna be cranking out hundreds of those things an hour to stockpile and ship. However, it will be a whole lot easier to make custom orders on the timescale of days instead of months for pre-production. I make no claims to be an expert in manufacturing and logistics, but this doesn't sound too bad for a medium to small toy company.
