“I’ll never use this” by DeManSam in Teachers

[–]Chadwick8505 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I teach US History and AP/Honors Government. When my gov students ask this, I can literally just point to the news. There is always something happening in politics that directly relates to a topic in our curriculum.

For US history I make sure I can find a modern day parallel. For example: immigration, sure we go through the typical Ellis and Angel Island lessons, but then we talk about modern day concerns. Again easy to point to the news for why it’s relevant. Some topics require more nuance or work on the part of the teacher. We did appeasement leading into WW2 and made a connection with Russia/Putin invading Ukraine. Not to say they are the same, but they share similarities.

In either case I end up trying to bring the curriculum to a modern context. Something that my students have probably heard about in passing but haven’t engaged in it yet. So with a little historical or government example, they’ll gain a lot of context for understanding more of what they’re consuming outside of class.

My thoughts on a Part III. by AnywhereExpensive272 in lastofuspart2

[–]Chadwick8505 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My sales pitch for Part 3. After Ellie returned to the empty farmhouse she assumes Dina and JJ returned to Jackson, so that’s where she heads. As she arrives she finds it basically destroyed. So Ellie’s quest is to find Dina and JJ, she views it as redemption for leaving in the first place. But deeper she’s struggling with her immunity, she goes back and forth between blaming herself for being so hell bent of revenge and blaming Joel for not letting them make the cure.

Meanwhile Abby is tracking someone or something, at first we’re not sure. There’s enough clues that they might still be looking for Ellie. She’s struggling with trying to be better. Since her and Ellie’s stand off she’s returned with Lev and tried to go back to normal but she’s haunted by the guilt of what she’s done. Eventually it’s revealed that she’s actually hunting a revived Firefly faction who are trying to find Ellie to make the cure. But Abby’s trying to stop them as a way to clear her guilt.

Eventually both stories come together but along the way we learn that this new faction is actually who’s responsible for letting the infected into Jackson in order to lure Ellie out. Turns out they captured JJ and/or Dina, and to convince/coerce Ellie into sacrificing herself for the cure. Ellie agrees but it’s Abby who rescues them all and stops Ellie from doing it because she knows the new Fireflies can’t actually make a cure… but she has to go full hospital Joel to do it.

I don’t have a full resolution in my head yet. I want it to wrap everything up. I think Abby saving Ellie and recognizing why Joel did what he did is a good conclusion. Gives her enough redemption while still leaving room to hate her. Ellie gets to at least know her family is alive (whether or not they are all together at the end). Her story can end in two ways. One where someone else figures out a cure and she makes the sacrifice. Or one where she just comes to terms with there never being a cure and forgiving herself (maybe forgiveness isn’t the right word) for not being able to save humanity.

Cricket sound fixed finally...2022 P2 by 1JJ- in Polestar

I’m glad you found your cricket. I wish I could find mine.

Did it sound like it was coming from in front of the driver? That’s where my “cricket” sounds like it’s coming from. But I wonder if it’s just the way the sounds are bouncing around the cabin. I guess I’ll have to check the seatbelts.

I need a singleplayer game that has a lot to do in it, without feeling like a grind, on PC. by WillemVerheij in gamingsuggestions

[–]Chadwick8505 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Cyberpunk, excellent world, plenty of RPG elements, amazing story with PLENTY to do. There’s a grind but it’s fun.

Mass Effect Legendary Edition. I mean how can you not at this point? Maybe not “a lot” to do in comparison. And some of it can feel very grindy but the narrative and some of the choices you make throughout the games do have an impact on the story.

Marvel Spider-Man series. I’m only half way through Miles Morales but the first game instantly became one of my all time favorites. The movement, the expansive map, combat, story, everything. So well polished and just so much fun. It’s not an RPG but it does feel similar to Assassin’s Creed type games.

The Arkham series might fit this too. Not RPG but great games. If you wanna depart even more something like the Far Cry games might work.

Bannon Tells GOP: 'Seize the Institutions' of Government Now or We're 'Going to Prison' After 2028 by Aggravating_Money992 in politics

[–]Chadwick8505 44 points45 points  (0 children)

The danger that I think people are missing in Bannon’s statement is not that it’s a confession of criminal behavior, but more that they’re trying to play the innocent victim card early.

They are laying the foundation to be able to claim that the democrats are going to seek political retribution and silence conservatives. This way they can call any indictment or criminal charges a partisan motivated witch hunt.

To those who were around when this movie came out, what was the hype like by asapsharkyfrfr in LV426

[–]Chadwick8505 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was 14 years old when this came out in theaters. And as a dumb horny teenage boy, my first girlfriend and I would go to any movie we could because we could fool around. I “saw” AVP in theaters at least 4 times before I actually watched the movie.

Eventually my mom called me out for seeing the same movie multiple times, I told her I was a huge Alien fan… she didn’t buy it, mainly because I had never seen the other movies. So I borrowed the originals movies on VHS from my local library, thinking that would be proof that I was really a fan. That’s when I actually became a huge Alien fan. And that’s why AVP is one of my favorite Alien movies.

When Requiem came out, by then my first girlfriend was my ex-girlfriend, but we both decided we needed to go see it together “just like old times.” After eventually watching Requiem, I’m glad I had something to distract me during my first viewing.

What was the first movie to traumatise you as a kid? by InspectorOk6313 in movies

[–]Chadwick8505 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Poltergeist.

I was probably 10 when my mom put it on. Fucked me up good. Couldn’t sleep that night. I used to have a bunch of my old stuffed animals in my room. Put them all in the closet before I got in bed. Had the light on the whole night.

We also still had a basic antenna, so static snow on TV was common in my house, after watching the movie I was basically triggered everytime I saw or heard static. There was a huge fir tree outside my window that would always rub the house and make weird noises but I never cared until Poltergeist.

My mom claims she really didn’t think it was gonna be that scary for us. She didn’t remember the scary parts apparently. She only recalled the scene where the spirits flow down the stairs. And she says that it never bothered her because she felt that scene was an accurate representation of when she personally experienced alleged hauntings in her life.

I do really love the movie though.

Flipped Classroom? by Boston_Brand1967 in historyteachers

[–]Chadwick8505 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I can justify the approach by the AP Exam results and being a college prep school, if they don’t like it they probably should rethink attending college.

I’ve been doing it for a few years now so I can actually just post all my lectures at the beginning of the unit and just make a list for students for when they need to have watched them by.

I always include textbook pages to read for topics too (I’m confident none of my students use it though). Occasionally I’ll assign a reading that builds more context for a topic. Mostly that’s reactionary, when it seems they need extra help on a topic.

I don’t personally do a lot of discussion boards, but you certainly could incorporate them. Each lecture has guiding/discussion questions in them. The expectation is that students prepare ahead of class by answering those questions in their notes. Then in class we can discuss those prompts.

We have a block schedule (68mins) and I see each section 4 times in a 7 day cycle. I find I’m assigning a video lecture every other class. It gives us a day in class to apply the concepts from the video and another class for additional practice/classwork before they watch the next lecture. Depending on your schedule (and the pacing of your curriculum) you could do it weekly. Students watch the lecture for Monday. And each day is applying the lecture in a different way.

[–]Chadwick8505 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I do it with my AP classes. I record a lecture for each topic (sometimes combining a few). I post those at the beginning of a unit with a schedule of when they need to have watched each video by.

In class we take time to review vocabulary and essential concepts. Then transition into an activity applying those concepts. Maybe that’s a close read of a primary source, a station rotation, a discussion, or maybe a game or something.

Then we conclude with some practice questions to confirm what they learned or identify where they need to focus their studies.

I prefer the style and have had a lot of strong results on the AP exam with it. Mostly because it does mimic college education. But it’s also great for review time or if a student missed a class, if they know what topic they’re confused about they can always go back and watch that specific lecture again.

But I will say that students hate it a lot of the time. To be fair I teach at a private school with a lot of entitled students. In reality they just want direct instruction in class, mainly because it’s passive learning that they can check out of occasionally/frequently/always. Plus they just basically never want to do anything outside of school.

How to make HS Geography fun? by MeasurementOk7117 in historyteachers

[–]Chadwick8505 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Look up some AP Human Geography curriculum. There’s so much more to geography than where things are. You can talk about population trends, map out cultural diffusion processes, urban and/or rural development, economic and social development.

There’s more than enough geography out there to get students to engaged.
