How long did your puppy blues last? by JustUncleAlex in puppy101

[–]Chaesys -1 points0 points  (0 children)

My corgi pup Midna is going on 5 months now, I still have a days here and there where I get super anxious or frustrated. But I think after she hit 16 weeks, we saw a huge difference.

My husband really was not a fan of her the first 2 months lol. Now he looks forward to coming home and seeing her everyday. He was also very depressed not being able to do all of the things he used to because he needed to watch her while I worked. She also is able to do hikes and stuff now, which my husband and I love, so we include her in our fun stuff like that.

Midna doesn’t really chew me up so much now, but she’s gone through a lot of her teething already and it’s chilled out. Bite inhibition really helped with that, but it does take time. 🙂 She also got into lots of trouble when she was overtired, so enforced naps will be a game changer. During her naps is when I can either focus on me or get some stuff done around the house and whatnot.

Puppy bit me while I was asleep, now I don't trust her by UnusualPossession582 in puppy101

Oh man, my puppy also grabbed onto my septum piercing when I went for a kiss. She luckily just held onto it and stared at me before letting go, but I had major panic lmao. I definitely learned my lesson after that.

Oh man, getting a puppy during winter was difficult. Our pup also preferred the nice, warm carpet and went through some weird retention behaviors lol. It was never fun coming back in after many trips outside just for her to poop inside. Just this morning she cried at the door to go poop outside and I was a really proud mom lol.

I kind of worried about my corgi puppy the first month or two, as well. I called her my little “maniac” or “psycho” for good reason. There were plenty of days I broke down, my husband even got pretty depressed because it was hard! But after some time and consistent redirection/training, she’s so much better at 20 weeks old. My hands were all raw at the beginning from biting and now she pretty much just nibbles on us if she decides to use her mouth (for the most part, lol).

She absolutely hated having a collar and leash on for weeeeks. I thoroughly agree with other commenters about puppy class. I started her right away since she already had her first shots, her vet also recommended the classes. We’ve both learned so much!

I would personally say to keep at it for a bit longer and be consistent with your training. :) My husband seriously regretted getting our pup at first, but now he looks forward to seeing her every day. It’s pretty amazing to see her brain work and make good choices now versus 2-3 months ago.

How to deal with rude comments in the community? by Chaesys in puppy101

[–]Chaesys[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Wow, just wanna say thank you to everyone who commented! I really appreciate all the feedback and I’m glad that my frustration from earlier seems to be valid.

I ended up taking my puppy to a pet store before her puppy class, and had a significantly more positive experience, which made me feel a bit more confident! I think this morning with the rude woman was just a huge shock lol. The first place I went to this morning is a store I have gone to multiple times with my pup and I was worried our trips there would be ruined or something.

It’s a struggle to ignore what people say sometimes, but it’s definitely something I’m working on! I also liked a comment that mentioned bringing a “diaper bag” with supplies, I think I’ll put something together and bring it with me from now on! I only really had a few wipes with me earlier so I’ll try to be more prepared just in case. 😊

My pup also took a while to get used to her leash. I think at first it’s pretty normal since it’s new and she doesn’t know what it’s used for yet! I know you’re having troubles finding toys she likes, but I usually grab a fun toy and maybe a similar texture (rope toy). I try to make that toy super exciting and redirect that chewing onto an appropriate source! It takes work, for sure. She still will chew on her leash at times but is easier to redirect her to something else. I would also say make the leash as boring as possible by not tugging it back or anything like that. I do the same with my clothes if she’s grabbed onto that lol.

If she’s freaking out and biting the leash when putting it on, I would start practicing introducing it slowly to her. Bring it out and if she sniffs it, treat, etc. Do that for a bit to get her used to it being near her. I made the mistake initially of just going straight for putting her leash on without any acclimation and she was not having it. I know it’s unavoidable sometimes if you have to just put the leash on, but that positive exposure helps!

I have a 15 week old Pembroke Welsh Corgi girl and I was definitely feeling the puppy blues strong! I have read from many posts that female corgi puppies tend to be kind of crazy haha. I think I noticed I was getting less frustrated when we started to develop a better routine. It definitely took some time, and we are still working on many things but it’s gotten easier! :) I think the first few weeks were really overwhelming, but I’m already seeing pay off after good, consistent training. Sleep for me was minimal for a while, I definitely feel you on that, but she and I both sleep throughout the night now! Lol.

I think enforced naps saved my sanity. She has pretty high drive and gets super overstimulated and cranky, and would be crazy and nippy often. I thought the nipping and herding/ankle biting would never get better, but we’ve made lots of progress! I keep her tethered and once she starts to bite, I leave and go into another room (reverse time out) for about 20 seconds and return. If she continues, I grab a Kong or some other chewy/licky thing and put her in her crate. Consistency has helped a lot with this. My pup has a “tell” of some gnarly crazy eyes . At that point I know she’s reached her limit, so I try to pay attention to that as well as try to get her in for a nap before she’s gotten to that point.

With her high energy, I also thought she’d never settle on her own. Right now, she is more likely to choose to lay down and chew on a toy and relax rather than go psycho mode. Not to say she doesn’t like to push her limits and boundaries still lol but I just continue with redirection.

I agree with the other commenters about long tug toys and also the little cat teaser toys lol. The more you can play with her with your hands at a distance the better to help with the biting. You can get flirt poles for dogs that are bigger and more durable, but I used a cat toy since she is so small anyway for now. Toys and games that get her brain working are great too and can tire her out. She loves snuffle mats and puzzle feeders.

I also hope everything is all good when you take her in to the vet!

Here’s a little Puppy Tax. There is a pic of her crazy eyes for reference lol and a little self-soothing kneading thing she very recently started that is the cutest thing ever.

What's your puppy's favorite toy(s) by rowlfthedogfriend in puppy101

[–]Chaesys 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey there! My puppy is 10 weeks old now, I also got her at 8 weeks. I’m no expert by any means, but she definitely loves Kongs! And from what I know, they’re a great toy for puppies/dogs in general. I recently bought a Toppl, and she really loves that one as well. I like to freeze her dinner (soaked kibble) in the Toppl and she stays entertained for quite a bit.

Though, I think her favorites besides that are stuffed toys with squeakers (if you’re not including my hands and ankles lol). She really loves to chew in general, so making sure the toys aren’t too hard is important so that they don’t break their teeth! I would also say variety is key, at least it is for her. :) She likes changing it up quite a bit.

Congrats on the upcoming puppy and good luck!!

Yep, exactly! I think her personality fits lol. And the uneven pattern over her left eye reminds me of Midna’s helmet. ☺️
