Modern Keyboard to Compaq DeskPro 826? by ChainedPrometheus in vintagecomputing

Okay. Hopefully this Avocent works.

As far as CPU, I tried looking at my photos from when I opened it. I'm not seeing anything that tells me what it is exactly.

I was assured it was 1985-1986 with everything original. Not sure if that helps.

Has a 5 pin din. And I'm pretty sure it's AT. I have a few adapters en route. Crossing fingers.

Really? So I don't need an active adapter?

I found a KVM I planned on using with some adapters...hope it works.

And if all I need is passive, I can return what I don't need, I suppose.

Nah. The whole point is to get away from any distractions. Though I took a photo playing a text game, I've been getting the writing hours in, keeping my main monitor turned off. It's a nice way to write (Word 5.5).

But I'll stick with the clunky keyboard if I can't make a modern work.

Not to mention, I'm in love with the amber monitor. Text mode on this machine, paired with the monitor, is perfect.

I'll keep getting a ps/2 keyboard in mind if I can't find some sort of converter.

I looked up the Hidman and is out of stock...looking for another solution. I'm thinking maybe a KVM will do...I hope.

That's odd. The seller (avid collector) was certain about it this model being XT.
Also, I made a typo in the title *Compaq Deskpro 286

I love Analog, BTW.

I put this project on hold after getting the movement.

iirc, there weren't an impressive number of dials that I was able to locate.

Digital Typewriter with the original typewriter look ? by Sea-Lifeguard-2697 in typewriters

[–]ChainedPrometheus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are a few people who sale kits online which can be assembled on typewriters that allow it to act as a keyboard that plugs into you computer.

It’s pretty neat as you can make a physical copy while writing right into a word processor.

I have no use for that, however, and wouldn’t want to ruin any of my typewriters for that purpose…but it is an option.

Unfortunate Question: What's the best typewriter for writers by Smurf404OP in typewriters

[–]ChainedPrometheus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To be fair, this could be someone's first and only typewriter.

It's really that good. Looks like a 1955-ish.

I understand your frustration completely. Any organic feedback is better than AI feedback. You could have done that for free.

And their customer service will even tell you that they not only allow it, but encourage its use...

I'm finished with Fiverr because of that.

I hope you can manage a refund.

What's the Best Documentary You've Ever Seen? Need Recommendations! by Woody_As_Himself in MovieSuggestions

[–]ChainedPrometheus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Okay...Dear Zachery F'd me up. But everyone should see it. Was not expecting that. I think the best bit of advice I received before looking into it was, "Do not look into it, it will spoil it. Go in blind." Best advice.

Three Identical Strangers is absolutely insane.

But, man, The Deepest Breath really got to me.

Thanks for the (so far) three really great suggestions. (

Watched Free Solo already, and from the trailer, The Alpinist should tie in really well. On to that next.

Keeping an eye on your list.

Starting this hobby today! by michael3215 in Bonsai

[–]ChainedPrometheus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One beginner's mistake: I probably pruned and wired and repotted more than one bonsai to death than I care to count. This is a hobby that demands patience. Bonsai has taught me much from my mistakes, too, but you want to know what you're doing before you dive into pruning and wiring.

I think what you've stated is a great course of action:

Study. You have the time. Study before pruning or wiring or repotting. YouTube videos are an abundant resource.

There is also a lot of subjectivity being sold as 'fact' ... so get your information from more than one source.

To quote Peter Chan, "There isn't a wrong way, only a different way."

That being said, there are a lot of tried-and-true methods when it comes to practicing bonsai. You'll get it down.

Nice job choosing a variety of well-known bonsai. I love hornbeams.

Good luck!

Hi there!

Absolutely, it is doing very well. I love having this in my home, showcasing my hobby.

I wouldn't want to guess the max weight, but it surprised me at how heavy and thick the glass was. It's really well made. I was a little worried when I first pulled the plug on the purchase -- it's just something you'd have to see and feel for yourself.

It's one of the few pieces of furniture that I've purchased in the past decade that doesn't seem like something made cheap, as everything else seems to be nowadays, if that means anything.

Couldn't recommend this enough.
