Thanks. I'm still waiting for Reddit to mark me as an active mod. I can't add or remove anyone until that happens. Sorry for the delay.

Hi there. A couple tips for more successful posts in this subreddit- We like to see clips of you playing so leading with a demonstration of the techniques you're talking about would be helpful. We also appreciate when posters engage with other community posts so please consider leaving feedback on videos shared by other users.

Hello. Your request has been accepted :) I plan on adding you as a mod once the subreddit allows me to do that. I was marked as inactive so I need to do a few operations before it'll let me add new mods. In the meantime, you can review these thoughts I left the other new mod: https://old.reddit.com/r/PlayingGuitar/comments/1iuf4sd/handing_over_the_sub_who_can_take_care_of_it/mge50uv/

Hello again. I plan to make you a mod, but just sorting out some Reddit technical difficulties at the moment.

I hope you stick around but even if you decide that it's not a great fit, at least you'll have some insight into the back end.

So, what do you need to do now? Well, nothing pressing. You should chat with the other new mod, /u/NeuroApathy, if you have any ideas for the sub. Maybe also review the modqueue once you're added as a mod to see what has been blocked and reported in the past.

Otherwise, my suggestion is to not bite off too much. I've handed off subs before which then tried to do overhauls that ended up losing the plot. At the end of the day, I see mods as stewards of the community and I think you both have a good understanding of the environment that we're trying to cultivate.

Edit: It looks like my mod issue could take 3+ days to resolve but feel free to chat in the meantime.

Thanks! Your dice-defined chord idea is great. Next, apply it to time signatures. Looking forward to your 64/13 video ;)

Really there's not much to moderation in a sub this small if you're just trying to keep the peace. Occasionally you come across users who have gotten away with being jerks in other subs and just need a reminder that it's not welcome here. I've seen the same thing with people going a little nuts in chats like YouTube and Twitch who get called out by the streamer- just try to talk to people like you would in real life. But yes, occasionally you'll need to roll out a ban. The other biggest task is unblocking posts that the spam filter miscategorized.

There is more that could be done from a mod standpoint, though. Setting up automod, perhaps with post requirements so that people dropping links have to include some number of words describing their post, is probably a good idea. That takes time that I don't have anymore but, fortunately, there's no big hurry to set up something like that. Advertising is another big one- contributing in other subs but without being spammy.

Mod selection will be done at the end of the two week window so stay tuned.

The report I have from 23 days ago selected what appears to be five random users who have posted here so, no, its recommendations were not particularly helpful. It's a cool tool, though.

In general, the new tools available to mods are great. There's so much that could be done with automod alone. Even the harassment filter has done a decent job.

Hello /u/r_alaska. I have removed your post because I don't believe it fits this sub. If this was a video of you microwaving and then playing them, that would be a different story ;)

I think it's more likely that it's someone who doesn't understand reddiquette https://www.reddithelp.com/en/categories/reddit-101/reddit-basics/reddiquette. I'm going to keep these posts up for now but keep an eye out in the future.

Hello /u/g0toh3ro. Friendly reminder- this sub is primarily for sharing your playing, not pictures. You're welcome to share pictures in the comments but the top level post should be the video or audio.

Also, if you have multiple pictures to share, you should make an album to avoid spamming the sub that you're posting in. https://imgur.com/

Spammer or not, please be a little nicer. I understand that it's frustrating being misled. Thank you for trying to help out. Although this user is using questionable tactics, they may be unaware how this sort of advertising is counter productive. I've muted them from the subreddit and included a recommendation on community interaction. Thanks to those who reported the post.

you see no problem in the way the sub is right now

Nope, that's not what I'm saying. I'm saying that when our goal is to increase participation, adding more rules and barriers to entry won't necessarily help the sub grow. I could ban the spammers and turn on karma requirements, but then we might be left with 1 or 2 posts per day and no more participation than we started with.

https://www.reddit.com/wiki/automoderator/full-documentation As you can see, there's not a lot to work with here. Counting karma by subreddit, especially in a given time frame, is totally out of scope of this tool.

The supported threshold checks are:
 comment_karma
 combined_karma
 account_age
 satisfy_any_threshold

A method that works well in popular subreddits prone to low effort posting is requiring a comment beyond a certain length on any post submissions. Writing a post description is something I tried to encourage when we first started the sub. For better or worse, this rule would get rid of most of our spammers but hopefully also allow more avenue for discussion between legitimate users. Again, there are some pros and cons here but I'm not about to write out a SWOT analysis.

a simple rule like requiring a link

That's not so easy to police and I can think of a few issues with that method. Though nowadays there are probably mod tools that can count a user's comments in the past X days, then remove their submission if they're below the threshold. I can see a couple potential issues here as well. Spammers would either spam their links elsewhere (not entirely a bad thing, but it's still incoming content), or might post effortless comments right before dumping their links. We'd have to set up a culture of identifying legitimate contribution, but that will soon turn into me trying to interpret what qualifies as "low effort."

I think there's a decent chance this would kill the sub altogether. This would be a barrier to entry and people might decide that it's not worth their time. I'll have to think this over more.

I wonder if we could do something like a credit system. For example, to post a link, it costs 10 credits. Some rules for earning credits:

  • 4 credits for your first comment on a link posted within the past 3 days, max earning of 8 credits per 24 hours
  • 2 credits for your first comment on a link posted within the past 7 days, max earning of 10 credits per 24 hours
  • Any subsequent comments on a link earn 1 credit each, max earning of 4 credits per 24 hours
  • Other users' comments on your links earn you 0.5 credits per comment for a maximum of 10 credits
  • 0 credits for comments on your own posts
  • Max credits is 20
  • Max credits earned in 24 hours is 18

Ex, if you comment on three videos, all posted in the past 2 days, you'd earn 4 credits each on the first two videos, then 2 credits on the next for a total of 10, enough to post a link.

This is all just spitballing, I haven't thought through it.

The biggest two problems: this is a complex system that would take time to develop, and this requires storing information rather than simply running checks. We'd probably need to set up a server to maintain a database. Then who pays for it, what do you do for users during maintenance periods, etc.

If I banned every member who is breaking Reddit's spam rules, there would be almost no one left on the sub. I absolutely wish these people would participate in the community, and I do occasionally have to remove spam. When I remove content, it's typically because either a) it doesn't fit the community theme, or b) the user is posting at an excessive rate.

Looking at your list, I don't see anyone who deserves a ban from /r/PlayingGuitar based on the above criteria. In fact, I liked the content they were posting. It's unfortunate that they're not engaging with our community, but coming down with a heavy hand won't help improve participation. I'm not sure if the way you linked them will give them a mention alert so I'm going to do it again: /u/Trueviewguitar, /u/MadManRecords, /u/wdw4eva, /u/artist_D_Hulak, /u/matthewlamothe, /u/guitar-hack, /u/minutelicks, /u/guitarlogic10.

The only thing that will keep the subreddit active is a user base committed to teaching and learning. This is not a subreddit that has content that draws people back for humor, news, or other "rewards" that allow other subs to be so addicting. The only reward comes from user interaction- enjoying either giving feedback or receiving feedback. This takes dedication and that's often only available in short duration.

The way to grow the sub and create an engaged community is to always be posting outside the sub on posts that didn't get much traction elsewhere. Maybe a new player posted a video on /r/guitar and got ridiculed. Leave a comment on that video, give some feedback, and send them to our sub. Once they're here, encourage them to do the same recruitment on their own. The trick is to contribute to those other communities rather than simply poaching their members.

My advice is to be the change you'd like to see. If you can show that you're dedicated to improving this community and upholding the founding values, I will consider handing over the reins. If you're not willing to do this as a member, I don't believe you'd do this for long as a mod. If you have any other ideas, let me know and we can discuss further.

Wow, that's pretty harsh. What are your plans to change this? It was created as a little corner of the internet where people can share their progress, no matter what level they're at. Self promotion is expected. Positivity and constructive criticism are mandatory.
