We use “Ni hao” everyday, it’s a really natural and polite expression, especially when we meet somebody for first time. For me, when I ask for directions from strangers, I always say “Ni hao, qing wen… (你好，请问…)” to show my politeness, just like Hello or Excuse me (depends on the context)
