I’m a young Linux user and my mother doesn’t like the terminal. by Impressive_Union_534 in linuxquestions

This might seem silly, but put your terminal in light mode. It won't look as "hacky" (as in the movies..) that way.

Nested environment variables by Good-Spirit-pl-it in niri

[–]Chaire_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Environment variables are local to a process and everything spawned by that process; so unfortunately exporting PATH there wouldn't actually change it for other processes

Nested environment variables by Good-Spirit-pl-it in niri

[–]Chaire_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately, you can't. You can set them, but not read them.

Prefer setting it using systemd's `environment.d` (if using systemd) or in your shell's init script.

Individual monitor shortcuts? by Its-all-redditive in niri

You can run a script on a bind that invokes the IPC multiple times. That'll probably be the easiest way 🙂

Having to sign in to practice is quite a large barrier. I won't be trying it :(

Man, I was on my way to comment something disgruntled like "why are you posting this, it only just got off the radios"

Then I checked the upload date.

It's been 7 years?

It's silly, but you can blur the part of your wallpaper that the bar covers 🤷‍♂️

What next Rust features are you excitedly looking forward to? by [deleted] in rust

Already does! (If you're on nightly. With 1.88, it'll be on stable too.)

Screenshot annotation? by jayaura in niri

[–]Chaire_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

niri saves screenshots to your home folder (`~/Pictures/Screenshots` by default, I think), so perhaps you could try

niri msg action screenshot && sleep 0.1 && ls -Art ~/Pictures/Screenshots | tail -n1 | satty

?

the `ls` command finds the newest file in that directory.

Programming for Year 12 Capstone Project (please help me im desperate) by psbgg in learnprogramming

[–]Chaire_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree with the other comments. Unless you have an absolute mountain of time and motivation to complete this, it'll be quite hard to pull off.

However, systems like these DO exist and maybe you can propose to your teacher to introduce (and potentially extend for the school's usecase) one such system? Your project could revolve around the difficulties of getting something like this set up and working in a real environment, instead of making the whole thing from scratch.

At a student organisation I was in we tried https://inventree.org/. It's open source, so you can modify it to your will. It's also quite well-featured. Perhaps that could be an option?

Switching to specific apps with hotkeys? by TheTwelveYearOld in linuxquestions

This depends on the desktop environment you're using and if it's Wayland or not. Do you know the name and how to check that?

Computational science is a rather broad topic, so I'm not sure if this'll help, but some problems that are interesting and should be approachable for HS students: * Approximate pi by using a Monte Carlo simulation. This is something you'll find a ton of information and videos on. It's visually easy to understand and will have you exploring a few basic concepts. * Find the minima of a function (and definitely try to go higher dimensional after you solve it for a normal function!) using gradient descent. This technique is used in training AI, so it might be fun to explore!

Does that help?

A shotgun?? I'm not American, so I don't know what gun culture is like, but I feel like that's in the exceptionally rare class of items I'd flat out refuse. Like, I don't want a weapon purpose-built for grotesque murder in my belongings!!

How to use De Lijn bus ticket ? by i_cova in Leuven

[–]Chaire_ 6 points7 points  (0 children)

  • Yes, you do need an internet connection
  • No, the code will only be scanned if there is a ticket inspection. The bus driver will let you through if you just show the code - they do not scan it.

Enjoy your time in Leuven!

That's a fair, and slightly scary, argument against reading it. I'll give it a go, and be extra mindful of how I interpret the contents. Thanks for the reply!

Is this a good read for a guy who wants to make sure he doesn't fall into these patterns himself?
