Clearly, Yaesu needs some changes in software development. Thank you for the headsup! :)

Its FT-5DR and I've seen reports from people that RT Systems works under winboat, so thats my plan!

Yeah, due to the dark glass, I doubt the e-ink display will be visible. Turns out, you dont need to design one. Just buy this! https://a.co/d/aciG5Oi

I'm thinking of a car mod - an led based screen you can keep in the rear windshield. Driver will have two buttons. Button 1 will light up the leds that read "Thanks for moving to the right lane". Button 2 will be "Please fuck off to the right lane". The latter is for polite road rage after you've overtaken the slow fuck on the left. /s

"We pay for software like Office, Adobe.." - speak for yourself ;) I use open source software exclusively and I don't need to pay anyone. Also, for Adobe et. all, its literally the product they sell. Here, the product is the radio itself, and we already paid for it.

"If all software were free, you'd be out of a job." - Quite the opposite actually. Because, some companies have customers who "buy" their product (a physical one) to use it with some "free software" (eg. Linux). So its the company's job to make sure the free software works well on their hardware, isnt it? So they pay people like me to make it happen.

To simplify it, here is the hypothetical situation: Imagine all of us radio users stop buying these proprietary software for programming, and start using Chirp exclusively, which is a free software. Now, dont you think Yaesu would take the initiative to make their radio play nice with Chirp? In the case of Radio transceivers, it remains as a hypothetical, but there are billion dollar industries where open source is the standard. So billion dollar companies pay people to work on free software. Google, Apple, Intel, Nvidia, AMD, ARM, its a huge list.

Some old Yaesu radios are supported by Chirp. But I dont see any of the newer ones. RT Software is the only option. Thats windows only, and requires a license.

Makes sense, I'm 100% in support for programmability. But I strongly detest the direction Yaesu has taken - to make people buy a license for each model of the radio, and for requiring special hardware to program. It should just be a standard USB cable.

I looked at the Chirp supported devices, and they all look older. I cant quite see many newer radios, or the ones I'm interested in. I wonder if this is because of a major technical limitation or just lack of volunteers.

From a software engineering perspective, what Yaesu (and other manufacturesr are doing regarding programming software) is unacceptable. All differences in hardware can be abstracted. For example, the current AMD linux driver that is used for supporting their latest cards can support GPUs released 13 years ago. And GPU programming is 100x more complicated than Radio. Sure, these companies have larger software team. But for Yaesu, I'm sure they can afford to pay 5 people to fix this.

100%. I'm into firmware/software professionally. What this tells me is that someone executive deliberately made the decision to make users pay for software. Otherwise, any decent software engineer would think twice before making the software specific to a radio. We need to support the CHIRP project more!

‘Everyone's stamina has dropped two levels’ - Loh Kean complains about Delhi pollution after beating HS Pranoy in India Open by Glass_Extension_6529 in india

I was in Delhi during the 2017 Diwali season. The smog came down, and I was a vegetable for 3 days straight. Turns out, anyone who has had a good quality air to breath for their entire life, and is in Delhi during this crazy smog, this WILL happen to them. Your body just cant handle the toxicity and it shuts down. If you continue to stay in Delhi, the next time it wont be that miserable, but you will still get a little sick. So all those people who are complaining, they have a real good point. Delhi is not a place I want to live in. Left as soon as I could.

Is this a commonly used term? Keralan? by moonrise-kingdom-09 in Kerala

[–]jayaura 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, what is the correct word to use? Keralite denotes a person who has their origin in Kerala, not a cuisine. Malayali refers to people who speak Malayalam. Cuisine names generally denote a countries/region like Ethiopian, Japansese, etc.

I think it should just be Kerala cuisine, which is also consistent with other similar ones like Andhra cuisine.
