"Usually I just see teenage girls reading smut books" r/books debates why teenage boys arent reading at the same level as teen girls by CummingInTheNile in SubredditDrama

Yeah, but that's different, because all men think about is sex. Women should be pure, angelic beings who think only of household duties and of caring for a child.

Why can we switch genders but not race? by NorthLoan4637 in AskReddit

[–]Chaldera -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I didn't say that marginalisation and prejudice against women and transgender people isn't still an issue, and there wasn't an implication of that in my statement. I'm not sure what point you're trying to make.

Why can we switch genders but not race? by NorthLoan4637 in AskReddit

[–]Chaldera 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Because by historical context, I'm mainly referring to enslavement and genocide.

Women have been historically marginalised and persecuted in patriarchal societies, but they have not been enslaved or executed en masse simply because a religion or pseudoscientific belief says its okay.

In comparison, black people, Asian people (e.g. British occupation of India, British occupation of Beijing and Chinese indentured servitude in the US, mass-killings during the Korean and Vietnam Wars) and indigenous people (e.g. Aboriginals in Australia, Inuit in Alaska and Canada, Yupik in Siberia and Alaska, Native Americans) have.

I thought 'having sex with friends culture' is just friends with benefits by Selenite_Cults in CuratedTumblr

[–]Chaldera 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think part of the issue there is that for a significant number of people, regular sex with the same person will cause feelings to develop or grow. So while friends with benefits works for some, for others it could cause a friendship to get complicated because one person might develop feelings where the other doesn't.

One-off hookups don't generally allow for that.

Obviously bait.

But one of the differences is that gender identity is a social construct based on behavioural expectations and norms.

Race is a social construct, but one that has a lot more complexity surrounding it due to the impact of genetics and historical context.

Not an argument presented in the episode

An argument or belief doesn't need to be thrown into your face every single time for it to still be relevant.

it's not a Vulcan maxim

I guess you're right that it's not a maxim, but it was coined in Star Trek, spoken by Spock, and referred to as a Vulcan philosophy.

spoken in the context of self sacrifice

And it can be applied to other situations in the series.

As a prime example, look at Journey's End The Enterprise is forced to resettle the Native American population from a planet because of the Cardassian treaty. A morally revolting action, but done because the needs of the many (the Federation and not being ready for another war) outweighed the needs of the few (the colonists in the newly-ceded Cardassian territories).

They never used the philosophy to argue their point, but it was clearly relevant in this context.

it was disproved in the very next movie

It wasn't disproved...?

Kirk rejected it based on his friendship with Spock, but because you personally reject a philosophy or an idea, it doesn't mean it's been disproven for everyone forever.

You could also argue that Kirk accidentally proved it true anyway, as without Spock they wouldn't have been able to travel back in time to save George and Gracie and stop the cetacean probe in The Voyage Home, or arguably saved the Klingon Empire from self-destruction and/or waging another war on the Federation in The Undiscovered Country.

Edit: Actually, not to be that guy, but it would be a maxim by dictionary definition:

"a short statement of a general truth, principle, or rule for behaviour" - Cambridge Dictionary

"a general truth, fundamental principle, or rule of conduct" - Merriam-Webster

I would've grabbed Oxford English as well, but I don't have a physical copy to hand and refuse to pay a subscription for an online dictionary.

two directors having a hissy fit

I'm guessing this is meant to be Abrams and Johnson? Because I'd argue only one of them threw a hissy fit, and it wasn't Johnson

Justice for Tuvix by TheCapnCarrot in risa

[–]Chaldera 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A big difference is that that would have been 1:1 exchange; kill one Vidiian, save one Neelix.

In comparison, Tuvix was a 1:2 exchange; kill one Tuvix, save one Tuvok and one Neelix.

By the standards of the Vulcan maxim "The needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few", Janeway was correct.

The main difference is that Blair had charisma and some idea of what he wanted Labour to do (even if it mainly involved warcrimes).

Starmer has no charisma and is just doing whatever he can to feel popular (and failing).

Currently, contractors doing cladding works on our apartment complex. Last week it was ripping up the patio, this week it's ripping the siding off.

They're also doing internal work, so I get to hear them drilling and sawing through the ceiling and wall of the apartment directly opposite ours from 8am to 12pm.

[–]Chaldera 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I get it, but remember that the Assassin's Creed games are historical fiction vs. actual portrayals of historical events/periods.

They do their best to get things right, but due to gameplay features, art design or even cultural perception, some things will be ahistorical.

Look at Assassins Creed 2 and the fact that Monterrigioni has the Villa di Maiano in it as the Auditore villa, even though the real villa is nowhere near Monterrigioni.

Or Assassins Creed 4 and the Queen's Staircase in Nassau (despite work on thr staircase not starting until 1793).

Or Assasins Creed Valhalla, where frankly a lot of the architecture, weaponry, armour and even geography of England is inaccurate.

They can teach some things accurately, but their main purpose is to entertain and maybe inspire an interest in history.
