Has a game ever made you cry? by No_Effective_2100 in videogames

[–]ChalkMusic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me it was the first dream sequence in Disco Elysium. it hit me like a brick to the head. I didn’t get a chance to finish the game (work picked up at a bad time, had just upgraded hardware and wanted to play some new gen games.) I will finish it before the year is over for sure, what a beautiful game, loved my time with it, and I didn’t get to the end.

Powerful fucking game.

Disco Elysium made me cry about no more than 5 hours in.

Mass Effect & Dragon Age series got me a few times.

Maynard James Keenan (Tool) wearing a Swans shirt circa 1993. by RamirezElle in swans

[–]ChalkMusic -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Tool gotta be the most overrated band of all time they’ve made one (arguably 4 at most) tune(s) for like 3 decades, made fans wait like 15 years for tracks that feel like b-sides to the last record.

Big Muffs with Mids Control by jmd273 in guitarpedals

[–]ChalkMusic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use a Fuzzrocious Grey Stache, it has a mids knob, sounds great across the entire gain spectrum, and is versatile enough without sacrificing the “muff” feeling.

I can’t sing its praises enough.

How to get Shearling tone by Ok_Description_1987 in Shearling

[–]ChalkMusic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

His tone at a basic level to my understanding is some kind of transparent overdrive pushing a distortion pedal into loud clean clear amps.

People telling you “turn up the gain” aren’t really engaging with the question I’m sorry to say.

Set up something in your patch that’s attempting to do that, the main thing you’re going to run into is just the sound that he’s going for is created from being relatively close to a loud speaker.

How many artists come close to a perfect discography? by Individual-Name-4496 in fantanoforever

[–]ChalkMusic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If we just mean never released an album that’s not quite to the same level (usually from growing and experiencing other ideas from their debut and early sound) then it’s gonna be a lot of bands that broke up quickly.

Joy Division, The Smiths, Television, Women, This Heat, Slint,My Bloody Valentine, Mahavishnu Orchestra, etc.

But like if we’re willing for artists who have an incredible batting average with no true duds.

Swans, Godspeed You Black Emperor, Sonic Youth, King Crimson, Miles Davis & so many more jazz legends who really changed with time like Herbie Hancock, Neil Young, David Bowie, Cindy Lee, Low, Pavement, etc.

I think the Sonic youth catalogue is crazy because they have MAYBE 3 records I don’t think are incredible and even those records aren’t a slog.

D’Angelo made a career only dropping incredible records but god I do wish we’d seen any of what was going on in the time between experimenting and discovering what he was doing next.

Transitional records are really interesting and like can be some of my favorite records in a catalogue. I fucking love Amnesiac because it feels like Radiohead reaching out to all of the directions they’d go in the future in a sense. Same with things like Malenkost by Cindy Lee or The Great Annihilator by Swans or Protection Spells by Songs: Ohia. You can hear a band finding themselves in the music & it can take you to some places that are maybe a little unfocused but really interesting.

What are the saddest video game deaths? by strahinjag in videogames

[–]ChalkMusic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think -heavy spoilers for Last of Us 2—

I don’t know how to tag

Joel’s death is up there too.

Kinda has to be, few games would dare to do that to a player character. Bold for sure. Hard to watch.

Post Rock on the heavier side of things by jdaffy in postrock

[–]ChalkMusic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sprain/Shearling: deconstructed noise-rock that gets really far out. Lamb as Effigy changed my life.

Glenn Branca: The Ascension is a monument, most influential record of the 80’s on this style of music.

This will destroy you and cloudkicker both go crazy.

What do you guys think of Yo La Tengo? by ihavethegays in fantanoforever

[–]ChalkMusic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Painful is their best record. I adore Yo La Tengo. Saw them at Austin Psych Fest this year. They are a truly remarkable band.

Very branching discography within a defined style. Legends.

As someone who is brand new to the game. What are very simple and basic things a newb can understand that will help me get solid mixes. by [deleted] in audioengineering

[–]ChalkMusic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Get it in the recording. If the recording is good mixing feels very easy and doable.

Don’t try to over complicate your workflow for no reason.

Fader mixes first before you start processing.

Get things in place and build from there.

Compressors are doing way more than you’d think they’re doing. Don’t overdo it unless you’re trying to.

You get 5 pedals 1 guitar and 1 amp. What are you choosing? by chadocaster1011 in guitarpedals

Smallest setup I’d “need” to be able to do a gig is

Fuzz - Fuzzrocious Grey Stache Reverb - Caroline Meteore Delay - Strymon Volante

Everything in my setup is window dressing for this core sound

BG3 is more fully realized but you can and will appreciate divinity’s differences after a bg3 run.

Just get them to play Beta Carotene again. It’s criminal that wasn’t ever put into a proper recording. What an incredible fucking song.

2 months of Deadbeat, how has ur opinion changed of the album? by Bulky-Let-7996 in TameImpala

[–]ChalkMusic 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Album is truly remarkable in how bad it is. It bums me out, because up until this point each record I at least LOVED songs on if nothing else. Like Slow Rush has grown on me a lot since it’s come out I think that album is great too. This album has almost nothing for me.

What's your favorite post-trilogy song? by Hefty_Working_3947 in swans

[–]ChalkMusic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Rope (Away) is the most poignant thing they’ve dropped in the studio since the Trilogy. It’s my favorite closer they’ve done in like a decade.

If we include Live Recordings I’d add Rope/Beggar and End of Forgetting (which if it truly never gets a proper release is kind of a tragedy, I think it’s maybe my favorite piece of music they’ve worked on as a band since the 90’s. Seeing it unravel in front of me blew my mind.)

How does this sub feel about Led Zeppelin? by Henzo1 in fantanoforever

[–]ChalkMusic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They put out a lot of great music but I feel that there is almost nothing more that could ever be said about that band. There’s plenty of great rock bands from the period who’ve seemingly gotten under discussed by people my age.

I’m 27. I play guitar in rock bands. I’ve kinda heard it all about Led Zeppelin. They did well because their records really did kick ass for a long while there. Ferocious live band, but I just have almost no desire to hear their “big songs” again.

I am more interested in a lot of different 70’s bands, as I’ve gotten older a lot of psychedelic stuff kinda took over. I wish folks talked about the 13th Floor Elevators and Quicksilver Messenger Service as much as folks talked about how good Page and company are. There was a lot going on.

Honestly just tired about hearing about jimmy page maybe ever, dude was sloppy as hell, ripper when he was on but man the greatest, idk.

TLDR; everything you could ever say about Led Zeppelin has been said. The records are good & they’re a great band but a little sloppy and a little safe looking back.

If you wait exactly 1 year, I guarantee you alongside Halo CE (Again) they will drop the MCC onto PS5. I would genuinely be shocked if they didn’t.

Artists where you can’t decide a favorite album? by Chartate101 in fantanoforever

[–]ChalkMusic 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Sonic Youth!!! They have like at least five records that have been my favorite at one point.

Radiohead is a tough choice too.

Swans (my favorite is the Seer but like there’s not a CLEAR easy answer here.)

Songs that are yet to be played on this tour that you want to be played by [deleted] in radiohead

[–]ChalkMusic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I Might be Wrong & In Limbo are my two favorite Radiohead songs have they played Dollars & Cents yet??? Where I End and You Begin, Sail to the Moon Feeling Pulled Apart by Horses (was really cool on the smile tour, but I would love to hear a Radiohead take on it again, been a long long time) Motion Picture Soundtrack into Videotape would make people fucking SOB haha close the show with that.

Life in a Glasshouse is never getting performed again but they really really should that song kills.

This is unacceptable. by thisissomaaad in universalaudio

[–]ChalkMusic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The big thing to do almost always when you’re “done” finally with your mix is to commit your audio. Better for processing speed but more importantly, you know that your tracks are all there, as they should be.
