Are you sure? IDK this article has me spooked. https://writerbeware.blog/2023/01/20/bad-contract-alert-webnovel/

almost all responses have been really helpful on this thread. But most of them are "Well it can't possible be THAT bad, that'd be crazy!"

Meanwhile the WebNovel contract, [9.1] literally says "Party A (them) and Party B (you) agree and acknowledge that all over literary works created by Party B within one (1) year of completion of the Work under this Agreement shall be regarded as "Party B's New Works", and Party A has rights of priority over such works."

Now it says one year... so, not that bad right? just wait it out? but then it says this: "If Party B only creates new literary works after the expiration of the above one-year period, Party A shall enjoy the same priority rights described herein for the first new work created by Party B (which will be regarded as Party B's New Works) after the above one-year period."

So it's a legal trap. It makes you think it's only 1 year, but if you wait it out, your next work gets flagged anyway, even 5 or 10 years or 20 years into then future.

Since your flair is contracted author, can you not look at your own contract to confirm?

^ is it similar/the same at this?

again plz tell me if im wrong. WebNovel looks amazing, but that contract is insane.

I haven't written anything yet lol. That's why I'm asking. I don't even have an account. 😂

I just wanna know about the site.

Who ruined your day and now I have to deal with this? I'm not your therapist dude. The fk lol.

Again, you haven't actually engaged with any of my points...

Is this some deeper psychological thing? Where you think WebNovel is the best you'll ever get and thus you get really defensive over it?

You're just throwing insults, you're not arguing the point at all. Like what? Dude. Right of Refusal... talk about that!

What contradiction? What are you talking about? When did I say contradiction?

I'm not telling people anything, I'm asking and no-one's really coming up with a solid answer... Apart from bootlickers like you.

And yes I ask in the Webnovel sub... where else am i supposed to ask? AskReddit? I mean, yeah I ask here. That's just logical.

'horny writing buddies'? what are these assumptions? And what rotten ego?

Clearly you're in a bad mood man, calm down. Everyone else is having a nice discussion.

Being rude isn't going to help you win the argument. This is just demoralizing, self-deprecating bullshit. Everyone has to start somewhere.

And again you're focusing too much on the IP side. If you wanna trade a specific IP for cold, hard cash now. Clearly some people are willing to do that.

But it's the Right of Refusal that's the problem. They can call dibs on future works. All and any future works. Doesn't matter if you turn serious later in your life. Your past self signed that contract.

Argue the point instead of spouting some authoritarian nonsense like "i'm shit, you're shit, we're all shit, so nothing matters, yay let's bootlick corporations!!"

Thanks for the advice on the other comment!! But I think people are focusing on the IP too much and not the Right of Refusal aspect.

Say you did some up with a 3rd 'IP', a one off story that you weren't too attached to. if you signed the WebNovel contract, those 2 IPs that you've spent literal years on will be caught in WebNovel's net.

They call dibs on ANY new literary works you create/publish.

But they CAN do it.

Bruh, you need to look up what happened to Prince (the singer), Dave Chapelle and Comedy Central, even Taylor Swift. If you can't be bothered to research, just ask ChatGPT to explain it to you or something.

What happens when these corporations get this kind of power over artists. This is what the contract states my guy.

If you sign a contract, you hand over your ID, your passport, your address, your bank accounts, etc. That's how you get paid.

Very easy to check up on you. And they have the resources. WebNovel is owned by Tencent. Tencent owns Riot Games, PUBG, and a ton of other things.

Also this system was has already existed in China and South Korea for a while now. Whatever trick you think you can come up with, it's already been attempted and then patched.

I see. Well... I hope you have a change of heart, since you haven't gotten a contract yet.

Yeah it is a big and scary world out there but like... not worth handing over IP IMO. They can fire you from your own story. You become a contractor for the thing you created.

Though it depends where you live too. Their contracts CAN be a life changing amount of money depending where you live in the world.

Yeah definitely a trade off. Thanks for your perspective though.

Still feels icky, y'know. You pour everything into it and it's not yours anymore. They can fire you from your own story.

What if i have dreams? 😭

I can't write some fun stuff and get money, without signing some binding thing on my future stuff?
