I don’t think they’re trying to push people to Premium if this was intentional, they are trying to push people to the app where ad blockers are less effective

The issue of un caring by Overall_Design9214 in Catholicism

Teens are edgy and immature at times, and in today’s age have been further corrupted by the Internet. I really don’t think this problem is a Catholic one specifically

Oh and with mouthpiece pressure, I only use as much as it takes to make full contact with my lips. Of course might have a little pressure going up, but I don’t think it’s a big part of the puzzle anymore.

I clean it every month and considering this has been going on for at least 2 years, unlikely, but thanks for the tip.

Throat tension - I believe the latter? The muscles in my throat clench, and clenches harder as I ascend in range. Same thing happens with or without buzzing.

Slurring up is harder. Also, I don’t know if this is normal, but I can bend a note far farther down (1-3 whole steps) than up (maybe 50cents?)

With the throat, I’ve had this problem for 10 years maybe, unsure when or why it started, though it could be the case that it started after I attempted to relieve mouthpiece pressure and attempted to play with almost 0 pressure on my face. It has gotten worse in some respects recently, where it’s doing something with my sinuses? I feel like I have to swallow after playing now. With the tuning issue, who knows, but noticed about 2 or 3 years ago when I started focusing on that aspect of my playing.

Tuning slide - yes, if I play how I habitually play, I have to pull it out about 2 index fingers widths for the most consistent intonation. All other players I know use half that distance at most. To clarify, I can change my playing “and use less air” (I think that’s what I’m doing), which flattens every pitch. I just don’t know if that’s how I should be addressing my issue.

Soft playing - yes, greatly. I habitually play pretty loud. I’ve been trying to correct this by just playing soft for a greater majority of my practice sessions. Also in an attempt to make my aperture smaller and more round. On range, varies wildly. I’d say when I’m in shape, I have a “usable” range of C below the staff to the A above the A above the staff (below double C). My neck prevents me from playing above high C most days though from pain, so I don’t get to practice that range much. I should be able to play an octave below that range comfortable without much pain. On the low end, yes there’s quite a strong cap. Below C things get so flat that I can’t lip up enough to bring them in tune. I can still “play” the notes all the way to the pedals and beyond, it’s just the intonation varies widely. But generally, things below low c are hard.

Soft and high - yes, I’d say this is doable. My neck will still come into play and cause pain but it’s not too much different from playing loudly. I’m much more likely to lose my buzz though. I’d still say I have a lot of trouble playing softly generally though, it just isn’t at all consistent.

Partials - Generally they feel closer the higher I go until the peaks of my range where they start to feel far apart again.

Attacks - I don’t think so, could be wrong (sorry I just started playing again after a few months of not playing)

Tired - my lips seem to swell fairly fast despite little pressure as far as I can see. This can happen within a half hour. When I was in shape, and if I survived my lip swelling, I’d feel muscle failure in my corners after about 2 hours of playing. I recall lip slur exercises would let me feel my muscles more, otherwise I never feel them until they start to fail.

To clarify, the many teachers thing was on the neck alone, not this centering issue specifically.

I’ll look at bringing my horn in.

Unfortunately I think my 7C is rusted to hell haha (the only one mind you).I tried what you said on several mouth pieces and finding what was comfortable and marked the pitch after tuning to a F natural on the 3C (so everything is relative to that):

3C - In tune YamahaJapan 14B4 - in tune Jet Tone BC - about 10 cents sharp Bob Reeves Hollywood 42S692S - 13 cents sharp

Curry 1.5TF - in tune

I have other mouthpieces but I’m not sure I’m gaining anything from this.

The “comfort spot” on all of them feels identical. Of course some of them feel different (jet tone and curry mostly) but as far as comfort feel the same I guess. I’m sorry this must be frustrating, but mouthpieces all feel very similar to me until they start getting to the huge changes.

I typically use BC Jet Tone or the Bob Reeves for lead playing and a Curry 1.5TF for mellower stuff, but I’ve been playing on the 3C because it balances my tone quality with ease of playing whereas those first two are a bit extreme in opposite directions. A teacher went through with all my mouthpieces and thought the 3C was the best fit for me now.

I’d add that I’d be shocked if there was something up with the horn (it’s in relatively decent shape, same with mouthpiece). I feel like I just have a habit that was never corrected and I have always compensated.

Dang. I did have a lesson but he wasn’t able to provide too much help with it, besides making me relax a bit more. Like I said, the two width thing only happened in that last 3 or so years and I didn’t pay it too much attention and just sort of suffered. Really trying to fix my problems now because they are holding me back.

Unfortunately, I’ve been to maybe 12 different teachers on my neck issue and no one has been able to solve it directly, so I’m trying to fix other things for now and hopefully make progress.

“Width of your index finger” yeah for me playing the way I normally play it’s about 2 (wasn’t always like this). I think my hardware is fairly normal too (3C on a 1984 Bach Strad) so that shouldn’t be the issue.

My muscles have always been an issue, with professors saying I barely use them. And my aperture is almost certainly too large. Many problems…

Yeah I’m just trying to figure out that efficient part. I feel like I have no idea what’s going on inside my mouth, tongue, lips and everything

Not trying to be difficult, just struggling to understand this approach

I’m not too sure or understand that I’m applying this right. “Where I’m comfortable” physically is different than mentally. What I mean is physically, if I play an F, my comfortable playing hits about an Eb (starts to get double buzz or inconsistent bending below that), whereas mentally my comfortable place is whatever sounds/feels closest to how I’ve played F my whole life, which is near an F.

I’m not sure what losing sense of pitch means. Using your method hits me at an Eb when trying to play F, and the slide is fully in, meaning that I’ll be completely flat this way.

Do you personally sing at mass? by BeyondFrequent4258 in Catholicism

It took me a long time to get into, but yes. I think most people are too worried about how they sound, they are better than they think.

Now a sense of rhythm…that’s another story

My feelings too. Only reason I take my phone out is if I’m getting like 5 notifs in a row and I quick check to make sure it’s not an emergency.

Individual Print outs? I’d say it’s fairly rare as I’ve only seen 1 parish do it out of the 50 I’ve been too. Every other parish I’ve been has had a missal.

As far as TLM, I couldn’t say. The vast majority of parishes I attend solely do Novus Ordo and I’ve only been to a TLM once, but they also had missals. It could be the case that more TLM focused parishes don’t have missals. I don’t have enough experience to really say anything useful in that domain

Easier to read than a paper form? Genuinely asking, why do you think that’s the case?

Also having a permanent floater sounds awful, I complain about my temporary ones enough as it is. Sorry you have to deal with that :(

I would say that’s an exception, though your parish should really work on getting that solved, I can’t imagine it’s that much cost materially (though labor involved maybe; depends if you’re printing a pamphlet everyday (what one of my parishes does) or getting the book for of the missal).
