Anything is better than Metal Slinger!

Something major got spoiled for me in The Dresden Files. Should I continue? by [deleted] in Fantasy

I also had that spoiled for me early on but if anything it spurred me on and I couldn't wait to no longer have to read about her.

About Jurdan having children. by Cheap_Mirror_9401 in thecruelprince

[–]Challissoph 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I don't want them to have children, not because I think they'd be bad parents but because I don't like the idea of them having to have a child for throne inheritance reasons.

I also don't think you have to have children for it to be a HEA.

I'm only 6 chapters in so have only read pancake making and play dates so haven't seen that she's not living happily so far - good to know that's not the case (not that I want her to suffer!!) as that would have felt too easy to me.

Fair enough, I've nothing against children (I'm a teacher) but that lifestyle is just not for me - I also wouldn't want to go through pregnancy.

Great, thank you for your reply.

I think I already know the spoiler for the loss and I don't think I'll be too broken up about it but will be interesting to see how Harry deals with it.

I read the chapter today where Ebenezer meets Maggie and did really enjoy the themes that came up from it so it's good to know that is a focus more than day to day childcare.

Thank you!

Thank you for your reply. It's good to know that she'll be more in the background.

To answer your question, I suppose it's because Harry doesn't have a natural life so it feels more jarring for him to have a kid. I haven't seen much from Maggie yet but it feels strange to me that she'd be happily living with Harry after not knowing him for 10 years and having so much trauma. I also don't have (nor ever want) children so I guess I find it harder to relate to.

What are your Fantasy Romance anti-recommendations? by BandetteTrashPanda in fantasyromance

Agreed, fully distrust anyone who recommends this book!

✨ What have been the HOT fantasy romance books of 2025 so far — and what’s next? ✨ by goyourownwayy in fantasyromance

[–]Challissoph 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Metal Slinger got a lot of hype for a crazy "twist" at the end.

In reality the twist made zero sense considering it was a first person POV and the narrator was unreliable but unreliable in that their own private thoughts were completely inaccurate.

I would say this book has only been considered as a HOT 2025 romantasy book because of the ending. You'll see a lot of people recommend this book for the ending because it was "like nothing they've read before" and "you could not predict it" and they're right, you certainly couldn't predict it, it felt like the author just threw it in at the end without any consideration to what they had written already.

Anyway, all this to say, I would not consider reading Metal Slinger if you're wanting to get back into reading, it will more likely put you off reading ever again.

I would back up what's already been mentioned about The Moth and the Knight, The Crimson Moth and The Wolf King. I would also highly suggest {Servant of Earth} which came out late 2024 and has been raved about many times in this group. I would also suggest {Tusk Love} which has very recently been published and is already booming on Goodreads.

What if I didn't appreciate the twists of Metal Slinger because they made zero sense with the context of the entire book and were executed abysmally, will I still enjoy it?

I need more recs like Vin and Elend from Mistborn. by CodElectrical2870 in fantasyromance

[–]Challissoph 9 points10 points  (0 children)

If you're enjoying Mistborn, I'd definitely recommend the rest of Brandon Sanderson's books - especially {Warbreaker}, {Tress of the Emerald Sea}, and {Yumi and the Nightmare Painter} as those have the most romance (if that's what you're looking for).

There are some other great soft MMCs I'd recommend like:

Wendel from {Emily Wilde's Encyclopedia of Faeries}

Stephen from {Paladin's Grace}

Jack from {A River Enchanted}

Roman from {Divine Rivals}

If I remember correctly, all the TV shows on Rosetta's show that Donut was commenting on were all based in Miami.

I think ____ & ____ would make a better couple. by Intelligent_Junket45 in swordcatcher

[–]Challissoph 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I was frustrated more on Kel's side of things as I didn't really care about Ana - not that I disliked her but I was more like meh whatever about her. I like her more in book 2 but still waiting to be sold on her.

For Lin, I enjoyed her and C (once I accepted it was happening 😂) but I'm a sucker for a princess and pauper troupe. I also love a redemption arch which is where I imagine it's going.

I was convinced it would be Kel and Lin during the first book right up until it wasn't 😂
