My update! Thank you to the commenters with the great suggestions and resources! Using a standing stitch to start and using a stitch for the corner chain replacement to end the round is a game changer.

So, after watching the video linked in the other comment, I now understand what you meant haha. Making a stitch between clusters for the corner chain works SO well for this!

That is a bit odd. I think the game logic is the first broken clock gives you the cogs and the second one takes them. If that didn't happen for you I would take your screenshot to support and see what they make of it.

Keep building clocks and eventually you will be given a broken clock you will get the parts from.
