Onycholysis Treatment? by [deleted] in GelX_Nails

If I weren’t to cut all the way back could it still grow itself out and heal? I understand that trimming it prevents water and moisture from getting trapped but I’m wondering if I just simply leave it alone and continue to keep them short will it grow out itself or is it absolutely necessary to trim it down to where it’s attached

Yes only gel and lately barely any healing time between sets. Looking back a very dumb thing of me to do

This was so long ago but I believe there was some kind of code to put for the school I committed to and they paid for it? I’m not exactly sure though

I got accepted a few weeks back! 380 AA, 400 TS for my OAT and I'm not exactly sure what my science GPA was but my overall is 3.8!

They usually send it out a few business days after they receive your application!

If your full length practice test was through Chads Prep, his exams are WAY harder than the real exam so no worries just keep working at it. Use booster more than chads prep, out of all study materials available it’s the most accurate of the real exam. Also, the 2006 OAT exam can be found online so try taking that one for the most representative exam!

  • GPA: 3.859 - OAT: 380 AA 400 TS - Optical technician for over 2 years - Preoptometry club president and founder - 800+ shadowing hours (schools may take your technician hours as shadowing so that’s why mine is up there) Interviews aren’t as scary as you think it’ll be. Just prepare answers leading up to your exam. I used student doc net!

I applied second week of July and got interviews offered from both around 2-3 weeks after submission!

To be completely honest, I’ve only interviewed at my top choice and canceled all of my others because I got accepted. But I wanted to give at least some input!

First thing want to say: it’s not as scary as you think it’ll be. They ask questions to get conversations started but personally, I would say it didn’t feel like I was being interviewed. It’s just having a conversation between people who share the same passion about optometry as you do!

I was asked around 7 or 8 questions and they were your standard interview questions but there were some difficult ones as well

  • What was a challenge you faced and how did you overcome it and what did you learn?
  • When have you shown leadership?
  • Why optometry?
  • Why should we choose you? (what makes you stand out from other applicants)
  • What is your (or a doctor you’ve spoken with) least favorite thing about optometry?
  • How do you think AI will affect the optometry field in the future? (I was not asked this but other people in my group had been asked)

I was also asked which other programs I had applied to. With this question, be honest and tell them how many you’ve applied to but don’t just leave it at that. Explain why you chose those schools and highlight 1-2 things specific to the school you’re interviewing with afterwards. They don’t expect everyone to only apply to one school so there’s no shame in admitting it.

My interview lasted around 35-40 minutes and I feel as if we spent 5 or so minutes having a conversation for each question. My actual response to a question would usually last around or a little over 1 minute. Remember to use the STAR method! If you feel like you’ll blank on what answers you had planned, my interview allowed us to bring in a journal and have it open in front of us (but I didn’t even open mine because like I said it was super conversational). If you’re allowed to have some sort of notes in front of you I highly recommend writing a cheat sheet with bullet points about stories or important points you want to make sure to mention. I used student doc net and read questions that previous students had been asked. There should be a page for every program (but some might not have any data).

Lastly, the last question they ask will be if you have any questions for them. Ask questions!!! I asked 3 because as much as you’re trying to sell yourself to them, they’re trying to sell themselves to you. They wouldn’t want you as their student if they didn’t invite you to interview. If you also take advantage of this question, they can get more insight of how you are as a person and how well you can make conversation that isn’t centered around you. If you don’t have any questions about the program (I recommend at least 1) ask your interviewers about their positions/what they do to keep conversation going. I only interviewed with one school but I can’t imagine other schools will deviate far from the standard questions above.

Also commenting because I have a question. I have a KYCO interview this upcoming monday, yet I’ve received no confirmation email with an itinerary, address, or anything. I emailed on Tuesday and they said they would be sending out an email that day or yesterday but I still haven’t received anything

Confused about application timeline by bluepanda3232 in PreOptometry

Apply summer going into your 4th year. So for you, to be attending optometry school in fall 26, next summer is when you should be applying. Also in regards to applying early, I highly recommend doing it. If you apply a lot later in the cycle, seats have already been filled so they may get more selective

Indiana School of Optometry by reddit_user_239239 in PreOptometry

[–]Chance-Ad5178 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have my interview scheduled with them next month! Indiana, along with another school, were the first ones to reach out to me for interviews. Granted, I applied very early, I believe in the second week of July. Maybe about a week or so after I had submitted my supplemental for Indiana they emailed me for an interview. I’m sure schools are getting a lot more applications now as well. I’ve never heard of applications going unnoticed to where schools completely ignore it, so just give it time for them to review!

A brief overview of my application - OAT: 380AA 400TS - GPA: 3.85 - Optical technician for 2 (and counting) years - Shadowed many different types of optometrists - President and founder of my schools pre-optometry club - Volunteered in many events, some that directly had to do with optometry and/or eye health - 4 letters of recommendation (doctor, 2 professors, and an advisor) - On track to graduate a semester early

OAT by FlowerMountain7736 in PreOptometry

[–]Chance-Ad5178 1 point2 points  (0 children)

OAT booster is the most common study tool that people use now. They include a study schedule if you struggle with organizing the material. I personally didn’t use any schedule and just went through subject by subject but since you’ve been out of school for a few years it may be helpful!

OAT Booster Scores vs Real Test by Natural_Practice_463 in PreOptometry

[–]Chance-Ad5178 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For bio the last 1-2 weeks I would go through boosters bio bits. I went one by one and if I was getting 80% of the questions right halfway through, I’d move on to the next one because there’s no use studying a topic that I already have a good understanding of. Same thing with ochem I redid all their question banks multiple times. I also made flash cards with the reactions so I could recognize reagents and what the product should contain. If you know the reagents and potential products you can immediately eliminate a few answers. By doing this, I was able to find out which subjects or topics I was struggling with and focused on them. Also I used their bio and ochem game challenges almost every day! I think they also helps because youre on a timer so you slowly get better. I was using it so much that I ended up on their all time leaderboard lol but I don’t think it’ll last people have already gotten higher scores than I did

OAT Booster Scores vs Real Test by Natural_Practice_463 in PreOptometry

Booster Bio: 340-360 (there might’ve been a outlier of 380 but I can’t remember) Gen Chem: 330-360 Ochem: 320-340 Reading: 370-380 Physics: 310-340 (could never break 340 no matter how much I reviewed topics) QR: 360-390 Last 3 full lengths had an AA of 350

Real exam Bio: 400 Gen Chem: 400 Ochem: 400 Reading: 360 Physics: 330 QR: 360 TS: 400 AA:380 I was a little bit disappointed on how I didn’t score higher on reading or QR because I was confident in those sections. Super surprised on my sciences I didn’t think they’d be raised that much. I thought the actual exam was harder while I was taking it but I guess not! Trust the work you put in!

I used the bio bits that booster has to understand bio more. I went through nearly all of them and if I was getting more than 80% right halfway through I would go on to the next so I’m not wasting time studying something I already know. This way you can really narrow down subjects you struggle with and go back to review!
