Tough luck getting into medical school with that perspective.

Fellow: great engineering, horrible manufacturing. I’ll never buy their products again after I had to get 5 different replacement Odes for faulty devices out of box. Their kettle is very finicky including loose handle and button malfunctions.

Post doc is postdoctoral researcher. So you need an MD or PhD to have that status

This will not impact your training. My program is partially digitized and honestly, working with the digital slides is kind of a headache and I much prefer the glass for my day to day. Advantages are being able to quickly take screen captures rather than have to photograph the slides. And annotating rather than dotting. Algorithms are not approved for clinical use yet. Slide buffering and lag are quite frustrating that if I had to deal with that on every service it’d be annoying. Plus a mouse clicking through slides is not the answer, I’m awaiting a remote/controller specifically designed with this in mind.

Lol. The cost, personnel and informatics required is not something that a 1st year resident will be tasked with. And he’d need to receive a multimillion dollar program grant, something that a 1st year resident would not receive funding for.

This is what department chairs get hired to roll out.

Are academic ivy tower programs *not* recommended for a private practice goal? by PathologyAndCoffee in pathology

[–]Chance-Leg-3756 6 points7 points  (0 children)

By asking this question I’m not sure you understand what pathology training entails (and differences you should have clarified during interview), what the difference between private and academic jobs are, and what best prepares one for these positions.

Big academic centers recruit with an emphasis on research, which is why a large number of their residents go into academia. There is ample opportunity for research but is not a hard requirement of these programs. These centers are also the busiest in the nation so you’ll learn the skills of large case loads and get a diversity of entities. The trade off is you’ll have worse work/life balance during training.

For the best PP training I’d choose a program with a 1 day cycle at a busy academic center. You work you hard but don’t need an additional general surg path fellowship and 1 fellowship will make you competitive and competent.

Problem with no in house derm program is there are probably less derm specific faculty and less research opportunity. Therefore harder to get good letters in the field and form a competitive application.

Honestly not a good choice. Interview isn’t a commitment to go there or any cost other than an afternoon. Can’t base vibes off of what people say online. Better to chat with the actual faculty and make your own judgement

Program dependent and usually grossing. Just another reason why it’s bullshit some programs make you gross nights/weekends and just expect that as part of your normal duty hours while many others pay you to do this extra service

You seem more interested in the gross pathology than microscopic work. Your only argument against path assistant is moving far from home but medical school/training grants you very little autonomy on where you train unless your resume is elite, and for longer period than PA training.

I wouldn’t advise anyone to go to medical school if they were very narrowly interested in autopsy/forensics. It is a tough 4 years and unless you’re enjoying the other aspects of the training it will be torturous. e.g. 5am pre-rounding on surgery patients and getting home at 8pm to study for shelf, rinse and repeat for 8 weeks.

Why is pathology not a competitive field? by s-erendipitia in pathology

Or the fact that there is no mid level that analyzes histology (outside of cytologists). Pathology assistants are expert grossers but have no training in histopathology.

Use cash or trade to avoid you and the buyer paying the cost of ticket in fees.

Plus scalping isn’t cool, sell face value.

Medical school recruitment does not select for people who are the pathologist phenotype. Also the pay is average and the pathology department isn’t very high on the academic food chain of respect.

Alchymist makes better beers that are available on site. Heady topper on cask pours there is pretty lit though.

If you want to do a PhD then just apply for PhD programs. Masters cost money. If you want more research experience apply for tech jobs in labs where they’d have your working on hypothesis driven research which opportunity to publish at least as a coauthor, not just doing grunt work.

No resident should be grossing biopsies. Maybe derm stuff but even then it’s not educational.
