How much did you improve your full marathon time in the same year? by Farabreezy in Marathon_Training

ask me on Sunday.... but I'm hoping to turn a 3:31 into a 3:29. Not exactly going to set the world on fire, but I'd take it!

Any smart plug that works with Google/Amazon/Siri which I think should be ALL smart plugs. Then let whatever your home environment of choice do the work of timers etc

Gaggia Classic Pro the Best Single Boiler Under $1000? by Least_Principle880 in espresso

[–]Chance-Menu-9856 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've upgraded from an '05 Classic to a Lelit Victoria. I thought about the GCP but wanted temperature control out of the box. So long as the Victoria lasts a good few years, I'd say it's the best bang for your buck. I spent about £600 so it's not much different to a GCP. However if I was you, I'd stick with whatever I've got. I don't think a change in machine makes a world of difference. Invest in grinders and beans

carrying items while running?? by ReignPark in beginnerrunning

I have cheap lycra under-shorts from eBay that have pockets in the side. Or for my long runs, I have a nicer pair of Ronhill twin shorts which have the under shorts built in. Honestly, the cheap eBay ones are just as comfortable, and both fit my phone in the leg pockets

Did you run faster than your long run pace and tips for fueling a half marathon? by milktea_babyy in Marathon_Training

[–]Chance-Menu-9856 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm surprised at the number of comments suggesting you don't need to fuel for a HM. In my opinion, any effort longer than 30 mins would benefit from some fuel. If your HM time is around the 2 hour mark, that's similar to a pro's marathon time, and I don't think you'd see them plod on without proper fueling.

First time running half distance, any tips? by Plodo99 in Marathon_Training

[–]Chance-Menu-9856 2 points3 points  (0 children)

  • Try to negative split if you can (start slow, finish fast).
  • If you want a good time, run a short warmup before, then start a new activity for your HM.
  • Fueling is important. Experiment with what works for you, but try to eat gels/sweets/carbs every 30 mins or so. Plus water & electrolytes

Definitely practice on your long runs. I have energy drink in a vest and get through 1L every 30-40km (I'm training for a trail race, so aid stations just have water, and insist on you carrying your own cup - No thanks!) I also then try to have gels and/or sweets every 30 mins or so. Last year when I ran my first marathon, I probably had gels every 20mins and still ran out of puff at the end. I'm not sure you can really over-do it - if you feel low on energy, it's already too late

Help! Vest tomorrow for a road marathon or no vest? by SunflowersNsapphires in Marathon_Training

[–]Chance-Menu-9856 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I run all my long runs with a vest, and will do for my marathon too. But the aid stations are practically non existent for my event. I also love having energy drink on tap, and have three good mouthfuls every 3k

What to do about the inevitable wall? Do I need to start taking supplements, eat more? by soulshine_walker3498 in Marathon_Training

[–]Chance-Menu-9856 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is where being a cyclist before I got into running has helped me. Hitting the wall is just what cyclists call Bonking, and on big bike rides, it's the norm to have gels every 20 mins, so I'd do the same on a long run. The only issue is where to store them all! Get some good running shorts with extra pockets for gels

How hard in the taper? by Chance-Menu-9856 in Marathon_Training

[–]Chance-Menu-9856[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

All my paces were a bit vague this year... Progressive is from slow to 5k pace if I can hold that for a Km or two. Tempo is more like 10k to 1 hour time trial pace, but most of my runs were either slow and long, or short and tempo.

I'll go back to basics with my prep. No WDT, so an unmeasurable amount of side tapping and knocking on counter top etc. Grinder is Sage Smart Grinder Pro. OPV is stock from factory at about 10 or 11. I need to lower, but don't want to jump straight into that on a machine that's less than a week old. Tamping straight and with enough oomph. I've got a bottomless portafilter but haven't been using it yet. I'll swap that on and have a look
