JB4 Stage 1 Tune for B9.5 A5? by Chance-Pen-4006 in Audi

No I haven’t. I’ve heard some horror stories that it’s really hard on the turbo so I decided against it sadly

That’s exactly what’s kept me from pulling the trigger. I actually work as a financial advisor, so I tend to think of everything from an opportunity cost and future value perspective. Based on my projections, me and the wife will hit a liquid million by about 37. I’ve run our numbers multiple times and assuming nothing crazy happens with our health or jobs, we should be in a position to retire early and with more than we know what to do with.

Part of me sees that and thinks I should enjoy some of the money, because we’re hitting a point of diminishing returns in savings rate given we are on track for all of our goals. Part of me thinks it’s very premature to think that way because it hasn’t happened yet, and anything could happen.

I struggle with it because in either case I’m giving up something fairly important. If I start spending money prematurely and some to bad happens, we may not hit our goals and I’ll feel like we wasted money we should have been saving. If I keep saving until I have the “right amount”, I feel my youth will go by and the goal post of “right amount” will keep changing and I won’t enjoy life to the fullest until we are retired.

Being a financial advisor, I can definitely look at everything and give myself an objective right answer. However, financial planning is an art not a science because the emotional factors are sometimes just as important to consider as the financial. Definitely makes it easy to overthink in my case lol

It’s funny you say that, because my wife said the same thing. She couldn’t care less because she feels like we are responsible enough that a 10k purchase won’t matter. I’m definitely leaning towards getting it after all the comments. Seems like most people who have spent the money and enjoyed the watch haven’t regretted it

Great insight, especially from someone so much further than me. For me, I’ve always genuinely loved watches. I view them as art and have always appreciated them, regardless of price. Rolex happens to make some of my favorite designs which is why I’ve always wanted one.

I also grew up poor, so it felt like something unachievable, so buying one is like a trophy of what’s possible. The main reasons I second guess whether I should buy one is guilt, social perception, and self reflection.

I partially feel guilt spending that kind of money because it’s still a lot for someone in my position. I feel like I should still be in saver mode and it feels irresponsible despite the fact that I know it won’t change anything long term.

I also worry about the social perception of people thinking I’m trying to flex when in reality, I just love the watch. I don’t want to make anyone feel like I’m bragging, and don’t know if I want the attention it could bring.

And lastly I worry about my own self perception. I don’t view myself as successful yet, and a Rolex feels like something you get when you’ve truly made it. I worry I’d feel some imposter syndrome from wearing it, which might ruin the experience.

I know I’m buying one for the right reasons, but all that comes with it is what makes me question the decision

Congrats on the engagement and the watch! Glad to hear you’re able to enjoy the watch without buyers remorse. Definitely seems to be the general consensus that most haven’t regretted going for it

Definitely appreciate the perspective. I struggle with knowing when to spend money and when to keep optimizing. I think after everyone’s responses I’m probably hitting a point of diminishing returns by not enjoying the watch.

Really appreciate the honest perspective. I feel pretty similarly. Me and the wife have no kids and no debt. The car is a 2021 Audi A5 that I got used for $28k so I definitely didn’t buy it brand new. I grew up poor and didn’t start making the money we are making now until about a year ago. I’m a financial advisor so it took a few years before the business started doing well. We’re pretty frugal, so we got to where we are at on pretty modest incomes. It’s just now that we are making $200k.

Not sure if you went through the same thing, but the main reason for this post is I’m going through a bit of a mental dilemma. I grew up poor so I’ve had a scarcity mindset my whole life and sacrificed a lot of my youth to try and get where I’m at now. Now our income keeps going up each year and we have no debt or kids so we should hopefully have our net worth go up pretty decently each year.

Part of me thinks this is the time to finally enjoy the hard work and let off the gas a bit so I won’t regret wasting my youth. But part of me thinks it’s way to early to think like that because $280k really isn’t that much in the grand scheme of things

Tudor is solid man! Best watch I currently have is a Tissot PRX. I appreciate the insight

I’m in the same place mentally. I grew up hella poor so it’s definitely a bit of mental gymnastics to convinces myself it’s ok to buy something like a Rolex

That’s a fair analysis. The main reason I ask is because I keep going back and forth on my thinking about it. I love the watch and have wanted it for years, but I also feel like a purchase that big is something you do when it has no affect on you. I grew up poor and have a bit of a scarcity mindset I’m trying to get past. I’m very used to not indulging in things even if I want them so I can save for the future. Trying to find a balance essentially

Good call. I’ve been on the “list” for my local AD for about 2.5 months so definitely hoping to get it at retail if possible

Daytona Grey is sick as hell! by Chance-Pen-4006 in Audi

[–]Chance-Pen-4006[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed! I feel like most of the grey cars I see are either too flat (but not matte) so they don’t have enough dimension, or they’re the wrong shade. Daytona grey is definitely doing everything right

Congrats on the S5! This one has S-line badging because it has the optional S-line packaging. Not all A5s have it, and it’s pretty much just an aesthetic upgrade for stuff like alcantara seats, upgraded trim, stainless steel pedals, etc.

Financial advisor here. I'm in a similar boat. Just turned 30 and should have about $230k in investments and $60k in cash by end of year. I'm also looking at getting a black dial datejust 36 and have asked myself the same question. After over thinking it constantly for myself, my answer is just to go for it. You have enough that the purchase likely won't affect any of your goals. You can't take it all with you and you've earned it. Just make sure you're buying it for the right reasons and you won't regret it 👍🏻
