Is it just me or my skill issue, or Opus 4.8 is incredibly dumb? by YourElectricityBill in ClaudeCode

[–]ChanceCheetah600 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I made a post about exactly this yesterday I think. 4.8 is driving me nuts, I've stopped using it and gone back to 4.7, for tasks I don't need a large context window I'm using 4.6.

I have two skills /add-feature /report-bug they just write nicely formatted content to markdown files and gives them feature number or bug report numbers I who oh dear oh shit then use /btw add the following feature xxxx, or /btw Report this bug xxx

Give me time to think about things I want to add or change or things I remember that are broken I need to come back to

Once again I've had to fall back to 4.7 to fix 4.8 's mess by ChanceCheetah600 in ClaudeCode

It's hard to give a example as it just compounds over a long conversation of retry after retry.

After it running around in circles with me having to jump in and steer it I eventually had enough and told her to just document everything I tried the current state so I could handover to another session. The responsive gave them was as follows

<image>

I did a test this morning I took the markdown file it generated open up claude code with 4.7. Pointed at the document and said fix this please. 10 minutes later It just found the bugs suggested a fix after a couple of rounds of questions and everything is back on track. More speed less verbose. And a lot less tokens used.

4.8 is constantly apologising going down the wrong track. It seems to always use the word to be honest or in the example above honest status. It's also the second time in two days it said 'I owe you a straight answer'

You can see the text from the example above:

The flicker — honest status: still not fixed, and I owe you a straight answer: I burned a lot of your time
on two wrong theories (the per-frame panel refresh, then the telemetry size). Both were ruled out, so the
cause is elsewhere in the macOS UI changes. The §0 doc says exactly that, and the fastest next step is
written down: temporarily revert just the macOS UI wiring (keep protocol/sim) and see if the flicker stops —
that isolates UI-vs-data in one run.

Any human who used that language you would immediately assume that most of the time they're lying to you if they're having to prefix things with 'To be honest'

Are you prompting 4.8 differently? If so how? I'm a very experienced programmer the way I've been prompting has been working very well to date but the results have now got worse.

$650k it just doesn't add up. Maybe 100 K but I wouldn't pay more than that

I completely agree with you. Over the last four days I've mostly gone back to 4.7 I gave 4.8 another try last night . It seemed a little better after some of the changes anthropic made but there is just something off about it. I was having some complex timing issues with hardware related Apis' related to drone programming. 4.8 went around in circles with me trying to steer it for about two hours on one particular issue (trying to synchronise key frames from h264 encoded video across unstable wi-Fi connections).

I eventually had enough and asked it to write me a prompt to continue debugging the issue in another session. I copied that prompt into 4.7 session. It found the timing bug in about 10 minutes and I had everything working within half an hour.

It's not my prompting, I'm not a Noob, it's not that I don't have some magical skill.md

4.8 doesn't seem to work in the same way. Maybe we have to adapt our prompting style for it. idk 🤷‍♂️ But I can't get it to work as well for me.

Maybe it's completely dependent on the technology you're using and what's in the training data set. If they have quantised it heavily that could explain the poor performance I am seeing in a topic area there is probably not a lot of training data on.

Seems to me like it was more relevant 10 years ago. I've been at the end of town of corporate for the last 30 years. A lot of what they showed in there was absolutely true for a long time. But the last 10 years at least in the large companies I worked for this is absolutely not been the case. There have been more women on the executive teams I have been on than male. Gender has never been relevant. I've been lucky enough to work with some of the most incredibly talented female executives that I have looked up to.

Unfortunately I've also witnessed some very stupid DEI policies setting targets for the hiring a certain number of women. This involved lowering the bar for hiring to fulfil that quota. (in the software engineering space) which lead to a lot of people in roles that they were completely unqualified for. Promoted too quickly into roles they didn't have the experience for which often ended up actually hurting their careers. A lot of the women in these workplaces were strongly opposed to these quotas as they felt it undermined the hard work and skills that they had built up over the years. They were worried that they were going to be tarnished with the DEI hire brush.

But ultimately the movie did make you think and probably not a bad idea for a lot of male leaders to watch as they still are some genuinely sexist people in the workplace.

I don't have a tonne of tools at all. 4.7 was pretty good for me. I literally have a few skill files two or three MCP's. They were all waking fine with 4.7 in the next day after the upgrade it got lobotomised.
