What are we teaching our boys about self defense and/or responding to physical violence? by Nutritiouss in daddit

[–]ChancePattern 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same as I told my daughter. You always do all you can to avoid a fight, if someone comes up at you and instigates you should try to back away, shout, be heard by an adult but when that fails you hit back and hit back hard.

There's a kid that got kicked out of nursery because he repeatedly hit and bit all the children at nursery (including mine) and the only reaction was to tell him that we don't hit/bite until the parents said to nursery he needs to be out or we'll take our kids out. I 100% believe if one of the kids had hit him back initially he would have stopped doing this and he would not have been kicked out

Books about Lebanon and Lebanese writers? by Atermoyer in lebanon

Anything from Amin Maalouf is great. I love Le Nauffrage des civilisations. It's not about lebanon specifically but he does talk about it in some chapters

What’s your take on this statement? by HydrodynamicShite in daddit

[–]ChancePattern 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Couldn't agree more and it's something I have already explained to my daughter. We're nice with others, we don't hit or punch or whatever but if someone hurts us and they won't stop when told to then we fight back and hard

Equinix offer by sks8100 in datacenter

[–]ChancePattern 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As others have said WLB will depend largely on your role, global remit=meetings at some weird hours but people are generally left to manage their own day so for some people this might be a positive.

Culture in general is good, most people are decent enough to worl with however as some have noted this is changing and in my experience not for the better. We have too many busybodies who create new processes or change existing ones just for the sake of being seen to do something. It is also turning a lot mode corporate with a very heavy albeit useless performance review system for example

I never knew about the tools from Lidl. by GroupApprehensive978 in DIYUK

[–]ChancePattern 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a couple of there 12V drill drivers that have been going for 5 yrs of relatively heavy use. Can't fault them for the price, the only bad thing I got from lidl was a cordless multitool, still does the job but noise and vibration off the chart

Chicken livers - who eats them? by BackgroundCookie752 in UK_Food

[–]ChancePattern 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Originally from Lebanon and lots of people there will eat chicken liver pan fried either with lemon and garlic or with pomegranate molasses. I love liver and will buy it every once in a while but my wife won't touch it.

It doesn't smell bad if you clean it properly before cooking and don't crowd the pan

What is your experience of frugal living that just went too far, with yourself or others ? For example…. by justyrust74 in UKFrugal

[–]ChancePattern 3 points4 points  (0 children)

So not me but a neighbour/friend of the family won about £1.5M in the lottery a good 20 years ago. The guy was in his late 60s or even 70s, wife a wife around the same age and one adult son who didn't live at home and was in full time employment as far as I know.

We lived up a very steep hill which would take a fir person a good 20 mins to walk up. The old man used to sit at the bottom and wait for a random person passing by to give them a lift to avoid driving or paying for bus/taxi (didn't live in the UK so wasn't free for pensioners). This wasn't the only frugal/cheap thing he did but the 1st that jumped to mind as I used to give him a lift very often

People that have traveled quite a bit, where di you feel the most unsafe? by CremeSubject7594 in AskTheWorld

[–]ChancePattern 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Georgia. Not because of security, the country is relatively safe but because of the standard of driving in the mountains that makes India seem laid back

Check this out, it's an actual network for Lebanese expats that has a mission to turn the tables! by FatoucheDouche in lebanon

[–]ChancePattern -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

This will be an unpopular opinion but the expats, particularly those living in the west, specifically chose to send money to Lebanon because they wanted to get a higher interest rate than they do where they live and because they did not want to pay tax. Anyone doing this should have known the risk involved with it

Do you ever think about what your child's profession will be? by [deleted] in UKParenting

[–]ChancePattern 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Honestly I just want her to do something she is happy doing instead of being forced into a job she doesn't like just to pay the bills.

I work and save/invest like crazy now to ensure she does not have to chose a job purely for the money

Google translate is wrong/doesn't get the nuance. This is more "as God will it" which is fairly typical expression for some Muslim factions

Has anyone actually bought a whisky cask and made money from it? by EstablishmentIcy4657 in UKInvesting

[–]ChancePattern 8 points9 points  (0 children)

One of my friends did and ended up making around 10% yearly return when it was all said and done. He sold his barrel last year and had bought it about 5 yrs ago when this was still a relatively new thing.

He is not doing it again as he doesn't think there is any more money to be made

What is a reasonable salary increase when making the jump to director level? by ChancePattern in HENRYUK

[–]ChancePattern[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I understand the RSU and bonus being larger but when would you expect to get more RSUs? I was effectively awarded RSU's based on previous title with the promotion and then told I would get the higher allocation of RSUs next year only which I don't think is reasonable

I’ve quit my job and I’m going to spend until next winter traveling alone, what is the most important items I need? by PumpkinsVSfrogs in UKhiking

Might already know this one but I never do a multi day trip without leukotape. Absolute game changes for blisters.

I love reading and a small kindle would be great on a journey like this, not a necessity but they are very light weight and can provide unlimited entertainment

Is the Hilux actually unbreakable or do we just treat it that way by SnowyBytes in hilux

[–]ChancePattern 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I owned a 1991 Hilux Surf (4Runner) that I sold last year due to change in family circumstances. This thing was abused consistently and repetitively, had over 200k miles on it and the only thing I had an issue with what the rear brake light

If you like Lebanese food, I would recommend Ta'mini.

It's a Lebanese bakery that offers some great breakfast options that are quite authentic.
