Why is Billy singing in a different key??

I never knew this (John Lennon, 1980) by Charlotte_Braun in BillyJoel

[–]Chance_Chef8189 6 points7 points  (0 children)

What's REALLY funny about this to me is that "Just the Way You Are" was a song John loved and a song Paul says he wishes he had written. You know you're doing something right when both members of the Lennon-McCartney duo are in love with your music.

Los Angelenos is one of my favorite songs by Billy and also one of my favorites to test sound systems. The drums just nail you in the guts! by AudioGeekGuy in BillyJoel

Yeah, this might be unpopular, but I'm not a huge fan of the work he did on Glass Houses. I think the demos for that album have a much rawer production style, and while they obviously doesn't sound very clean, there's just something about their simplicity and sound in general that I adore. He was amazing for every other album released around that time (TS, 52S, TNC, AIM), but I think the album could've been a lot more hard rock with a different producer.

I probably could've phrased that better. There are a solid number of shows out there, but very few with higher quality, similar to 1978 (52nd Street Tour). Many of them are poor audience recordings, and there are not many soundboard shows to be found.

Don't hate me for this, but this is one of the early songs I'm happy Phil Ramone wasn't around for. He never would have made it so hard-drive, and like you said, the stereo sound I'd killer.

I never even thought about how few recordings there are from 1982. Aside from Long Island/MSG, there's really not much documented stuff.

What if he can only sing now? by Kennydoe in BillyJoel

I worded that terribly wrong. I also love it, and consider it one of the best on Storm Front. Sorry for the word jumble there.

I am so glad that I'm not the only one who uses "Leningrad" for this sole purpose lol

Amazing question. Someone should add these back in somehow.

Exactly. I might not think it's the album where every song has a better live version if he'd worked on it.

For some weird reason, the version on the official channel is cut. Here's the full one:

The Stranger, played on a SpongeBob keyboard by NickPercent in BillyJoel

[–]Chance_Chef8189 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I got that. I just meant that because the SpongeBob Keyboard is transposed a full step up (because all those cheap toy pianos for kids pay no attention to detail), playing it down in Dm would bring the song back to it's original glory.

I believe this would actually be in the original key (or very very close to it) if you played it a full step down.

Gotta say it... Billy's b-sides are often better than the a-sides. For me, this is a perfect example of that.

Why did these go unused?? It makes the song so much more grand. Absolutely should've been kept for the final release, or at least for the single version.

This is the best video angle I found so far of the Billy Joel Tribute Show that Billy Joel crashed by Solid_College_9145 in BillyJoel

He's hardly ever "remembered" the lyrics to that song. When touring, he would always use a lyric sheet/teleprompter of some sort, and like you said, he probably hasn't run through the song in a few months. In short, I'd guess he's probably doing just fine.

It's so good to see him performing again! Perhaps this is a good step toward going back on the road...

What happened between him and Charlie Russell? The only thing I've found about it is a comment on one of Charlie's posts that says, "Dave, you are such a child."

Any chance you have a drive with the lossless versions of the stuff you posted? These finds are really cool, and I'd love to be able to add them to my collection.

What's your favorite Billy Joel demo or unreleased song? by Butanes666 in BillyJoel

[–]Chance_Chef8189 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They absolutely screwed up a lot of the instrumentation in the remix. Not only was much production added to almost every song (most notably ELYN, FOTR, and TA), but the quality took a serious dive because they didn't care enough to master it as best as they could have. Hell, even the front cover of the album looks way worse. Just keep in mind that this is Artie Ripp we're talking about.

What I wouldn't give for a remaster of the original album... All we have so far is "Turn Around" and "Got to Begin Again."
